off roading?

Asked by Abby Apr 07, 2014 at 02:13 PM about the 2008 Volkswagen R32 Base

Question type: General

I am looking into trying to find a car that can handle backcountry roads without the gas
cost of an suv. Friend suggested this car, does anyone have experience driving off road
in theirs? or a suggestion of another car to look into? im also looking into the subaru
legacy wagon and outback but am trying to broaden my searches beyond subaru,
theyre dont have the most comfortable interior. I am an outdoorsy person that would
want to load the roof up with bikes, boats, whatever and the VWs appeal to me
because I can reach the roof, and theyre sexier :)

the R32 is not really meant to be an offroad vehicle .It has AWD for fast acceleration but its not meant to be taken offroad.I would not want to get an R32 dirty since they arent that easy to find either.I would go with an outback or if you want the looks and some AWD a 2004-2012 Wrx would do since they do make rally cars out of them but would cost some money to get it to that point.

We have a 2004 R32 which we have owned since it had 7 miles on it. Is definitely NOT an off road vehicle! Drove it about 150 ft across what was perceived as level grassy field. The nose bumped the ground and popped the RH lower grill out (which was discovered 15 min later) and required a re-aligning of the front clip! A Jeep or 4WD truck is more suited for off road use.

How about posting your desired budget, vehicle size, and fuel economy specs and we'll discuss this more systematically.

if by offroad we are talking about dirt roads ,a wrx,sti or evo are fun,Now if youre thinking of climbing rocks or crossing rivers maybe you need a truck. Yeah normal mortals cant afford to offroad an R32 thats for sure.
