Gas tank

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
When trying to fill my gas tank I can only put in small amounts of gas at a time
because something in the tank is making the gas nozzle shut off prematurely.

EVAP problem. The displaced air and fumes go through a charcoal canister where the hydrocarbons are absorbed in the charcoal, then purged when engine is started, instead of going in to the air. This diagram is generic, not specific to your Chrysler, but they are all very similar or same. The vent tube may be plugged, or any of the vent valves stuck. Click image for full screen
Check the anti-rollover ball in the filler neck too. I've had to replace quite a few of them over the years for thei same reason. I cannot see the EVAP CONTROL causing this problem as it only deals in a very small amount of fuel vapos and should not be able to halt filling the tank.
As you pump gas in every unit of volume of gas must be displaced somewhere. Gas pumps flow fast, and all air must be pushed out. It's not a very small amount. And it happens rapidly. The air and fumes pass through the canister immediately, all of it, and if a vent valve is stuck my friend it sure will prevent gas entering tank
We'll see , I'm taking to my mechanic.
Mr Fordnut: the modern fuel delivery systems where fuel is dispensed, (read: "gas staion") have their own vapor reovery system that collects the fumes and vapors during the refuelling process. By negative pressure in the vapor recovery hoses, the station collects them into the station's own recovery tanks. There is no way an on- board vehicle's ECS system can or could handle all the displaced air/fumes inside a vehicle tank during refueling. If ...for some reason the station doess not have such a recovery system, there are vents surrounding the vehicle's lead-free nozzle inlet, that will allow any .... I repeat: ANY and ALL refueling vapors to just escape. There's no way the vehicle ECS is involved during refueling processes unless the engine is running too.
J_P_V Where is this anti rollover ball?

There is no vapor recovery at the filling nozzle. At best there is a rubber flap that is supposed to cover the fueling neck of the gas tank when refuelign. I do believe there is vapor recovery for storing the gas in the ground at the gas station. But all the nonsense of vapor recovery during fueling distracting from the conversation. Fordnut argument made some what sense.
I have a 2007 Chrysler T&C that wont fill other than a trickle but if i blow compressed air in the small vent line that attaches to the filler neck it fills fine. What is the compressed air changing in that small vent line that is letting it fill ?
