In `64, there was an inline 6cyl, I think it was 170ci or 200ci and there was the 260ci v8. If the car was built later in `64 it might have gotten the 289ci v8 (I don`t remember when they started with the 289, 64 or 65)

one more question for yah....in 64 was the mustang a sports car are muscle car?

i think it was more of a sports car in the real early years, at least in my opinion. with the biggest engine only being the 289, it was more for a sunday drive than the strip.

the most common engine for the 1964 mustang until the 1966 was the 289ci motor anything bigger woulnt fit between the shock towers and 1967 and up had different engine options but im not sure what they were.

The 67 started out with the 6cyl, the 289 which was later bored out to 302 and the 390. I think the 351 was available in 67 and 68 but I'm not sure. In 69 , Ford started with the really big engines, the 427 (very rare in a Mustang) 428 and the 429.
