Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Mechanics are requesting I pay another
100 for a recharge so they can find the leak
then possibly replace the evaporator. I need
help relating it all. Is it a leak or evaporator?

what they charge as a fee I can't comment. I can say that they use a sniffer to detect leaking refrigerant ; so they do have to fill the system to find where it is coming out.
in my opinion they would/should have checked for leaks the first time they filled it (, unless it wasn't the same shop that is doing it this time ) you could ask them if they checked for leaks when they filled it the last time.
No they didn't check initially and it was same place. When I took it back after he checked for a leak then because it was low and told me I need an evaporator and that is what I don't understand
I do not know the environmental law where you live, but where I live it is definitely illegal for a licenced shop to charge and not check for leaks. The government doesn;t want all that nasty stuff just blowing around.
Not sure about the law but I am sure that the check was included in the cost but how did he come up with it being the evaporator?
he found the leak there, it is just a closed loop where gas is compressed and turned to liquid, then it turns back into gas in the evaporator.
Ok thanks because it did have a funny smell they days it was leaking. Now for the real question. Does this have to be taken to a shop? Is the dash difficult to remove. I can't wrap my brain around the 780-1200 estimates I've received and then still have to pay to charge it again. That's a major repair price not a 120 part and 580 labor cost.
We used to have a propane fridge at the cottage, you lit it; NO ELECTRICITY ( therefore no compressor) the propane heated the liquid to turn it into gas, then it went around the loop and as it cooled it turned back into liquid( wrap your head around that;making a fridge cold with fire)
A/C is just a TOY, never had a car with air for years . I wouldn't try to fix it myself. Pay or get another estimate or go without.
