FORD ESCAPE KEY FOB

I have a 2008 Ford Eacape. The key fob will lock and unlock
the doors all day long as long as I have one door open. If I
close the door neither key fob, mine nor my wife's will work.
Doesn't make any sense. Why lock and unlock when doors
open but when closed neither fob will lock or unlock .  .  .
