AWD is always engaged, hence AWD, just like FWD. If your vehicle was a 4WD that would mean you have a choice of 2WD or 4WD.

There was the base 2wd manual or auto There was the XR 2wd manual or auto There was the XR 4WD which only available in auto The XRS to the best of my recall was only available in manual initially. The 4WD as noted is a 2 WD car until wheel slippage is detected and then the transfer takes place. My experience with one of the very first 4WD was the OEM tires sucked badly in the snow and I found I had to induce wheel spin to get the backs to come in and the car would then corner better. When I changed to Michelin Harmony tires I had a little tank in my hands.
