Need to step on the gas to start the car when it's been sitting for a few hours.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When my car has been sitting for few (approximately 4)
hours or over night it requires me stepping on the gas
petal, in order for it to start.  It does not require this if it
has only been sitting a little bit (under 4hrs.) Then it starts
just fine.  I thought maybe the battery was going out - so I
replaced it. This did not help. I took it to the  mechanic
and the only thing they could find was the throttle plates
had some carbon buildup which they cleaned. He said
this would help and it really hasn't.  The car has 123,000
miles, I purchased it back in November from an Audi
dealership at 118,000 miles. I would say this problem has
been there at least since mid December.
I'm not sure what could be causing this issue. Is there
something specific, that I should have the mechanic be
checking in order to solve this issue?

Sounds like a cold start issue , did your "mechanic " scan for any codes ? Thats the first thing to be done (usually) even if the light ain't on . Not too familiar with audis , on a cold start the motor needs a richer mix to fire up , this is done by an idle air control that you could remove and clean the cavity it sits in ,it gets a signal from the computer , the computer would get a signal from a sensor telling it the motor is cold , These things need to be tested to see what the problem is , if you read the other posts you'll find stories of "mechanics" that really should be baking bread instead of turning wrenches . Let us know what happens .
