my Impala will not get out of park when I start it and press the brake pedal. Is it the starter switch? How big of a job to replace?

The coil that holds the shift lever in place will not release. The steering wheel is not in locked either when the car is off;

It's not the starter switch it's the switch/sensor on the brake pedal that activates the lever release. I believe it's the same one that contrcols your rear brake lights, so it's the first place I'd ckeck. Check the brake lights fuse and the connection on the brake switch.

Another thing that may need to be checked is the neutral safety switch; however, they may have connected its operation with the brake light switch...
