The starter is located on TOP of the engine/tranny, almost directly under the top motor mount, under the throttle body, behind heater hoses, right next to a unicorn. Still haven't gotten it out, the unicorn is a biter.

The back bolt is a b****. You can't see it, you can't touch it. You have to use the force, a 1/2" socket on a short extension with a swivel on that. While levitating over the drivers side front corner, work your right arm toward the firewall and then left so that your hand is behind the starter. Work your left (holding the socket attached to the short extension and the swivel) into position over and behind the starter. Fish for the bolt, do a fair amount of cussing, and when you get the socket on the bolt, grab the long extension with your tail and snap it onto the swivel. Good luck.

It looks like it would be much easier to simply REMOVE the firewall from the car, then remove that back starter bolt from inside of the car, under the dash! Might have to remove the heater assembly too, as well as everything else that's in the way, under the dash. What a great design Ford had in serviceability of Ford Five Hundred starters! Push button eject of the starter would have been so much better!
