Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Hello, I have a 2006 audi a4 2.0t quattro. My check
engine light went on recently, then went off.
However, it had now came bsck. The code read for
cooling system. Main problem is in the mornings,
or hours after I haven't driven the vehicle it has a
tough time turning over. A mechanic said he thinks
I need to replace thermostat. I wasn't sure because
the car does not overheat. I thought maybe the fuel
filter? Sorry for tons of info. I don't know much
besides basic maintenance. Thank you!

2181 code can mean new thermostat, it can mean a bad coolant temp sensor or bad wiring or connection to the coolant temp sensor. It can also mean a low coolant level in your recovery tank. Not sure why the car has trouble turning over. what do you mean by that exactly, does it turn over slowly, does it turn over fine but not start, what?
It turns slowly, it starts just not in a normal manner. Sometimes have to give it gas to start
Starter goin bad I just went try tht by getting stuck on the road at first thought I had battery problems then replaced the battery. Then my mext thought was a short somewhere in the car. Lol never figured it out until the start just finally died
Acw25 Did you ever solve the problem? I havet the exact same problem as you have/had. My termostat was bad and exchanged. It didnt solve my problem though. Have the exact same car as you. Hard to start/turn over at first start. The when warm no problem. The car drives perfect.
I'm dealing with this issue on my 2010 Audi A4 2.0L Turbo Premium Plus right now! I took it to an Audi Independent specialist and he said it could be the Water pump and the Coolant sensor is attached to it and on some models even had a recall! Ran the number with authorized Audi Dealership Service and they said it had an extended warranty until 100K miles but not mine since the mileage on mine is 106k miles which sucks! I took it to another mechanic/ electrician and he said the first thing is to change the thermostat assembly since the gauge reads below the middle temp. pretty much at all times! It comes down to two major things: 1- Thermostat Assembly (lesser expensive R&R) vs Water pump assembly and coolant temp. sensor attached to it (damn expensive job).
