What cause battery corrosion?

I have to clean my battery terminals, regularly.. Flaky lookin stuff gets on them.
Is this common, and what cause this?

Battery out gassing is what causes it. Make sure it is not overcharging. NOCO rings help but will not totally stop it.

Once you get the terminals clean put Vaseline on them. They'll never corrode again. I've been doing that for over 30 years on all my vehicles. Works like a charm! Hope that helps! Jim
