What is a better engine that I can put in my 1970 mustang grande?

Question type: Car Customization

I recently obtained a 1970 mustang grande that has a stock 302 2 barrel. I know I can put
a 4 barrel on it and make it better but I am wanting to go fuel injected. I also want to be
able to run  between 170 and 200 horse power. Unfortunately yes I am on a budget but I
want to know my options.

The 5.0Liter 302 is in my opinion one of the best engines ever built. You can get 200hp easy out of it...if you don't live in California anyway. But if you are on a budget as you say, just go with the 4bbl.... converting to throttle body fuel injection would be the least expensive way to get FI but still expensive

Thanks that is actually just inside my budget. I got the car for 2000 and didn't want to put a $3000 engine in it.

Go find a Mustang or Ford Police cruiser (Crown Vic) with the 5.0 engine as it will bolt to the transmission, motor mounts and possibly exhaust you already have. The HO mustangs and police packages have the best EFI set up for power and if you grab the "entire engine package" (intake to oil pan, flex plate or flywheel, starter, distributor, exhaust manifolds, belts, water pump, brackets, ECU for the EFI, water pump and possibly the radiator) it will be an easy installation if you have everything to work with. Don't forget to install a 5/16 or 3/8 inch return line for the fuel rail regulator AND MAKE SURE you get the ECU for the engine you pull. IF you want to save money and do a lot less work, then online and order "#EDL-2031" for $649.97 from "Summit Racing" which will give you the correct 600cfm Edelbrock carb, Edelbrock dual plane intake manifold good for idle to 5500 rpm, intake gaskets and bolts. If you want to go further then change the fuel pump (for higher volume But you might need a pressure regulator), Mallory distributor, higher energy coil), 2.5 inch dual exhaust with free flow mufflers (I like Thrush Turbo's as they are load but not overbearing). Check out my "garage" page under the Ranger and you will see the cars I have built from bare chassis in my garage over the past 23 years.

I have read many of Fordtudor's posts and I don't know you but it is very obvious you know what you are talking about. @70stang: Listen to him.All of it. Even he agrees about the 302...

@Fordtudor, where is the best place to find a 5.0 im very new at shopping for car parts as I am only 17. My father is a little help with things but he works a lot of the time and my uncle, who owns a body/restoration shop, gave me a few ideas where to look but I haven't been able to find a crown vic. with a 5.0 in it. I would like to have a completely new engine in it. The one in it has around 93,000 miles on it and Id like to have an engine with less than 100k on it. If there is next to know chance of finding it let me know. My main goal is to be able to out run my dads 2008 4.6 V8 Bullitt.

Another eternal question. If your goal is to out run your Dad's 2008 4.6 this is not going to be a cheap build. For what you would spend on rebuilding your motor you could get a newer motor. The car won't be stock anymore but this is your car and only an issue if you want to sell it in the future. Putting a 4 bbl on your 302 2V will not do the trick alone. Know this from personal experience. You need a cam and some head work, springs, etc. That 4.6 puts out 315 HP. Putting a 4bbl and cam might get you closer to 300. I'd guess that the cheaper route might be finding a 5.0 motor from a newer GT Mustang. Even if you found a 4.6 modular motor that matched your Dad's car, his car is going to handle better than your old Mustang. It's not just the motor that determines quickness. If I wanted a fuel injected motor in my 68 mustang I would replace what I have with a newer motor. Then you need adapters to make it fit the transmission. What transmission do you have in your 70?
