Sounds like it is starting to slip. Possible rebuild needed. I would take it to a trany shop and have them diagnose it. Check your fluid level first tho...

Then there is a plug somewhere to pull. Pontiac's are like that, no dip stick. Same there, you pull the plug out, and the fluid level should run out of the hole slightly to 1/2" below the threads.

By all means check the fluid level and change it as well. You probably went too long between changes and likely will need a rebuild but the fluid change might be worth a try.

Have the tranny checked out by a good tranny shop. Checking the fluid in a sealed unit is a pain in the butt, messy, and has to be done from underneath the vehicle with the engine and transmission up to operating temperature. Ask the previous owner if he ever changed the transmission fluid. If not, that could be the cause. Also, there is a specific procedure for changing the fluid. It has to be pumped into the vehicle, closed up, vehicle warmed up, level checked again, more added, warmed up again, closed up, checked again.
