Trying to decide between a few SUVs

Asked by coreyw Jan 10, 2013 at 01:16 PM about the 2005 Ford Explorer XLS Sport V6 4WD

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I want to buy a late model used 4x4 or AWD SUV, paying cash.  My goal is dependable transportation for my family of 4 for the next 5 years or so, at which point we will likely upgrade.  I have been only looking at lower mileage vehicles (under 100k) and have found a few deals that I need to choose from. Please let me know what you think about the reliability and durability of these vehicles.1. 2005 Ford Explorer XLS Sport 4x4.  62k miles.  Good condition for $6500 out the door (including tax, title, license).  GSA car.2. 2003 Tahoe LS 4x4. Excellent condition. 77K miles. $8000 plus tax, title, license ($8800 out the door).3. 2005 Volvo XC90 V8 AWD. 69K miles, Good condition. $12,000 plus tax, title, license. ($12,900 out the door).

I would go with #2 - the Tahoe. The Volvo may be good if there is a nearby dealer. Volvo is known for their safety features but maintenance costs may be higher.

Let me muddy the waters by saying I've owned a 1996 Ford Explorer for 11 years & loved it. I traded it in for a used 2005 Lincoln Avaitor which I've had for 6 years with no problems. If you decide on a certain SUV, get a Carfax so you know it's history.

Check the mpg for these vehicles. I love them but I spent too much time filling it up. I have the ford explorer & mountaineer. I love the 3rd row seat options. Also check for recalls.

Unless you live in an area where AWD in necessar, I would stay from them. Judging from this forum there are daily questions about malfunctioning AWD's.
