Flickering Gauges
Asked by Lexy2487 Mar 16, 2016 at 06:15 PM about the 2005 Ford Explorer XLT V6
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My 2005 Ford Explorer has recently started flickering in
the gauges my radio shuts off and on and the interior
lights flash on and off along with a ticking sound in
dash/steer wheel column. This wil happen while I'm
driving all gauges go completely down to the left and also
while the vehicle is parked. Once vehicle is off the
flickering and ticking sound continues for a few minutes
after vehicle is off and parked. Could someone PLEASE
help me out. I've checked all fuses and wiring under my
steer wheel column and everything is fine.

With that many things acting funny all at once, I would look to the Electronic Control Module. It is the main controller for all the things that you spoke of that were acting less than the way they should. The unit is usually costly but relatively easy to replace.
Could you guide me as to where I can locate the electronic control module. I will be checking that this weekend.
Best you bring the vehicle to a shop which has the proper electronic testing equipment to diagnosis the problem. From your post, it sounds heat related. Depending on your particular vehicle it could be the ECM, the PCM, or the BCM, if so equipped. These parts are not only pricey, but many stores will not take back electronic modules once purchased. Besides many of these modules have to be programmed and updated once installed. Which is beyond the capability of us shade tree mechanics.
OJ is correct. There are multiple modules depending on your vehicle. I cannot help further since I do not know the specific locations for the controllers used in your car and, as OJ said, they may require car specific programming that would best be left to a qualified shop. Good luck.
you might just try lubricating the door lock mechanism with some spray silicone lubricant. At times, my console goes all funny and it's the door lock mechanism not operating correctly.

GEM module (General Electric Module) controls most of those things not. Related to lighting. Crown Vic's, Taurus, and explorers and Mountaineers I'm pretty sure ... have a dedicated lighting control module. I will say in my 30 years of wrenching... what y'all are describing has almost always been too much resistance in a power or ground... Just saying... Voltage drop test voltage drop test voltage drop test
hey everyone. i trouble shooted my 2005 ford explorer for the same problem and found out it was my igntion switch. replaced it and had no more problems
Gotta go with Asthewrench turns on this one. Start with ground connection & ground wire condition (look & feel for breaks & cracks, etc..) If "no joy" there is likely only 1 primary wire powering both systems - check. If still "no joy" then check the expensive systems... BTW We are not checking them last because they are expensive... Also ringing in 30yrs in December has proved with multi system issues the resolution has been roughly 80% ground related, 15% power related, 5% multiple system modules. Find Joy!
It started doing the same on mine, but i think the short is being caused by water that went into the top rear brake on my truck. The plastic is old and cracked and also some rust rormed around and when i replaced the brake bulb its connector was black and deformed from heat.. maybe that caused my flickering. But when I hit or tap the clear dashboard it stops flickering.
