Does 2004 Ford explorer XLT 6 cyl have a limited slip rear differential. How much oil does it take to replace removed oil from differential

Thank you so much. The auto parts store was not real helpful this afternoon when I tried to get information. I have a friend who has offered to fix a leak in the rear differential to save me some $$. Although I think he's knowledgeable, any helpful suggestions in taking on this task. Even as a female - I like to have some understanding :) Thanks.

Its not easy. I think the differental has to come out to reseal the cover. there is not enough room to do it in the car. just looked up the labor and it pays 5.2 hours to replace/reseal the cover.

@kbro: how did you determine that the Differential is limited slip without looking at the tag?

Is it actually leaking (dripping and low on fluid) or is the cover just collecting dirt? If it isn't low and dripping liquid, wash it off and watch it for a while. If you want to save money and are willing to take a chance, get one from the wrecking yard - be sure to take the ID tag with you - a small metal tag attached to the diff cover by a bolt. BTW - the tag will also tell you the ratio and whether it's a Limited Slip or not. The tag will read something to the effect of "3L52" if Limited Slip or simply "3.52" if not. The "L" in the number is the indicator. Also check the specs for the weight and type of gear oil. Many vehicles are using Synthetic oils.Some require additional friction modifiers and some do not.
