04 explorer knock/ticking

Asked by Adam16115 Jan 14, 2017 at 06:07 PM about the 2004 Ford Explorer XLT V6 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When engine is cold then started it ticks/knocks
for 30 sec to 2 mins the oil has been changed
every 5k miles with 5w30 sounds like it might be
coming from the front driver side valve cover but
can also hear it prominently if I put my head by the
wheel weld there's 142k miles on it and this
knock/ticking isn't normal I have a 05 mercury
mariner with 220k miles that's never made a noise
with this and it's been used abused and put away
wet anyway any suggestions to what this might be
and how do I reply to your answers can seem to
get that figured out either this coming up weekend
I'm going to try the transmission fluid in my oil then
change it and and add a quart of Lucas in with the
new oil to see if that fixes it

use a long object...screw driver? and place it on the engine in different spots...pull avalve cover and do the same..lifter/rocker /cam lobes..maybe its a easy adjust...also change to 20-50 weight oil..
