When you say won't start, do you mean it cranks over forever and won't fire up, or you turn the key and get nothing at all?
first you need to figure out whats lacking, Is it getting fuel? does it have the proper fuel pressure? Is it getting spark? You need fuel air and spark to make this run. As a quick test you could do is remove the air intake going to the throttle body, then have someone crank it over, spray some quick start into the throttle body, do not go crazy with the quick start, it is very flammable. and stand to the side and reach over do not stand in front while doing this, If it fires up and tries to run you know its a fuel related problem
Okay. You can try the quick start like StevenB suggested. That will let you know if it's a fuel issue. Also pull a plug wire and see if you have spark. That's the next piece of the puzzle. By chance do you have a security system? I have gone over this issue with people and they usually forget to mention it. Most of the time the vehicle is not starting due to some security malfunction. Or they recently did work to it and disconnected the battery which triggered the security system.
As Reelin said there may be a security issue, Do you have a theft light flashing, are you trying to use another key? When it is a security problem, it sometimes starts for a second then shuts down. You can also check with a noid light or a test light to see if you have injector pulse, that's what the security system shuts down
To start with ford Explorer would not have a timing belt, If the engine did not fire up briefly lets now look at the ignition part of it. Reelin did mention about checking for spark, did you pull a wire like he said put a sparkplug in the end of the wire and hold the end of the plug to something metal on the engine have somebody crank the engine over to see if the plug sparks or not
