My A/C cuts off after several minutes of normal operation

Asked by Retiredpilot Jul 12, 2013 at 12:03 PM about the 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The A/C works fine for several minutes, then cuts off.  If I select one of the heater positions, sometimes I get cool air that way.  If I shut off the A/C completely for 5 or so minutes, it comes back on when selected.  In past vehicles, I experienced freezing in the cooling coil due to the water drain plugging.  My unit seems to drain condensation OK.

One idea is to check that the AC compressor isn't engaged even though the system is off. A frozen-over evaporator is what comes to mind here but this concern is usually accompanied by a dead or very low battery. Ford stopped using a diode in line with the AC Compressor Field Coil circuit and thus, AC power relays tend to burn out and keep power on the AC Compressor continually. Just a thought.
