You can't go wrong with Mobil-1. Synthetic oil has properties that conventional oil just cannot match, AND does not have to be changed as frequently. Outside temperature doesn't mean anything! When running, an engines cooling system keeps the engine at around 190 degrees. Use 5w20 or 5w30 all the time and change the oil once a year or every 7500 miles and the car will run forever.

If you have an older collector car, and are as intense as I am about maintenance, you will have to consider using an oil that has adequate ZDDP so that you don't wipe the cam. This is especially true if your motor has solid lifters. Both Gibbs and Amsoil make oils that have high ZDDP content. The following is a wise crack so don't be offended. What do you care about outside temperature? All of my cars had water cooled engines and the thermostat kept the cooling system at 190 degrees or less. So if its 98 degrees outside, why do I need a 40 wt oil? We lived in NJ and my dad ran 20 wt in his '56 V-8 Studebaker year round. He traded that car with 170,000 on the odometer and it was using a quart every 1500 miles.

If it’s a 98 Durango it either has the 5.2 or 5.9 Magnum. They were known for the cylinder heads cracking between the valves. At first they begin using a small amount of coolant that needs topped off occasionally. After a period of time the cracks grow larger.
