why does the air bag suddenly come on and stay on 2004vw beetle turbo 2.0convertible

after the airbag light came on, the next day my check engine light came on and has
stayed on also, please if anyone can help

this was helpful but there are 2 lights on, air bag and check engine light? I took it to a local auto parts store and they said air bag problems would not show up any codes. thanx for your reply
