My guess is this vehicle has been repainted sometime in it's life. Poor body preparation has led the paint to start coming off. Also this is a 13 year old vehicle, they don't stay looking new forever.

LOL.. You are way off base.. I purchase the cra new from L&B Lincoln/Mercury in Bayshore Long Island.. The service manager said the peeling paint was from painting the car after the primer cote had dried. He said that the factory was supposed to paint the car while the primer was wet to make the adhesion work..He also said that I was the only one complaining about it. I would like to hear from other owners 2003/2004 Grand Marquis about paint peeling. I myself have seen many of these on the road. I laugh to myself about the fact that I am not the only one with sunburn paint.Yup.. they don't stay new looking forever.. but after spending $30000.00 you would think that the paint would last a bit longer !!!!

Glad you figured it out. I have not seen any of these cars with this issue in my area and that leads me to believe that possibly not a huge number of these cars is affected. I have seen some clear coat coming off though.

You are NOT alone! My 2003 has the same issue. I've seen it on a few other cars in my area (Michigan). My car is white and the other cars I've seen are also white. Other colors don't seem to be affected.

Peeling paint is mostly seen on GM cars and trucks but I do see Fords with peeling paint on occasion. My 2002 and 2003 Fords still have good paint.

My 2004 marquis paint is chipping off in flakes. You can see the primer underneath. No other color so I don't believe the car was ever painted. Bought it with 50k miles. Some of the primered areas are starting to rust. Rest of car is awesome as far as reliability and comfort.

Yes ! My 2003 Mercury Marquis is peeling, flaking off in bits and when its washed more paint comes off, even around the door edges, all I see is a silver color underneath, its not glossy its a dull look like aluminum tin! I was just looking for paint shops to have it repainted when I stumbled across this thread. I didn’t think it was just my car.. I figured it was happening to all the Mercury marquis, especially the white in color ones and the 2003 models. Its worth painting because it is a very dependable car, never had any problems with it just General wear and Maintnence.

My mercury grand marques 2003 is the same way as those above. Is there a recall on this? I would really like it repainted but the price is ridiculous. It has 53000 miles and runs great no issues.

Same thing with my 2004 Grand Marque. I read somewhere that it was a issue that Ford was aware of but not willingnto anything about..

My 2008 grand Marquis has exact same problem. Need to get it painted badly before rust sets in. I have to make a career change and I am putting it in service .Small Claims Court here I come.

Iron embedded in the body before paint and primer sounds like a dirty hand used to correct alignment of unpainted surface. More than likely intentionally done. Surfaces were less than clean from all contanimants.

My 2004 Tan colored Grand Marquis is peeling the paint as well. 2 Months ago it was a soo about the size of a nickel. Now there are about 7 spots on the good at top of the car. Separating from the primer coat.

Hear here, Same exact problem 2005 white Mercury Marquis. Beautiful car and started coming off last year dime size to hamburger bun size. I must have 30 spots. I wash the car three times a week in the winter. No other color marquee has the same problem. Only the white everyone I’ve seen.

I have a 2007 Grand Marquis that starter to peel on top of the roof 2 yrs ago. Now it is spreading like wildfire. Cancer everywhere. I agree we should be filing a lawsuit. My 1992 Grand Marquis hasn't lost any paint. What did they change?

I have a 2008 white with the same paint problem! ☹️

We should bombard Ford Canada on Instagram and slam them. I remember years ago there was a problem I think it was with Acura when they first came out I believe they had peeling paint problems. The starters in my vehicle about 3 years ago on top of the roof and now every time you go for a car wash it just comes off paint just peels off.

I own a 2008 Grand Marquis. Guess what color- white!! My car looks like the photos above. I live in Ohio. The Cleveland Plain Dealer published two articles about this problem: one in 2006 and one in 2011. The articles basically said that Ford had made some changes to the body which if I understand the situation correctly mixed iron and aluminum to create the body. That combination didn't allow the paint to adhere to the body properly, thus causing the paint problems. The articles said these problems were for vehicles with white paint. They also said that neither dealers or Ford headquarters were doing anything about the problem. I got the run around from my dealer. The cost to repaint was outrageous, and even if I could afford to repaint, I'd worry this would be money down the drain because paint might peel off again. I think the idea of a class action lawsuit mentioned above might be our only solution. If anybody has found a solution to this, please let me know. I told my dealer that this would be the last vehicle manufactured by the company with the "blue oval" that I'd buy if they continued to ignore the problem so many of us are experiencing!

Bob L Fla, Have a great 2005 Mercury Marquis bought as a condo car for inlaws and kept in a garage until I started using it to work in ( restoring my 1994 Yukon at 520K mi.). As soon as it was being kept in the sun the paint started pealing with rust spots. Has only 70K miles, what can I use to stop the rust spots?? It is the light green-gold color.

My 2004 gran marquis in ash gold also has a major paint peeling problem. About 8 years ago the dealership agreed to pay half the cost to repaint the peeling hood, trunk lid and top. The paint lasted 2 or 3 years before it started peeling again. I could probably remove all the paint from the hood by grabbing a peeling edge and pulling. Every time I drive the car, the wind catches a loose edge of the paint and begins lifting it up.

lol Same here..mine comes off a foot or more after each drive. The roof paint is almost gone and the trunk lid is about the same condition. Front hood is starting along with the doors now. We need to start a class action suit. I was told by the dealer that I was the only one who had this problem. Yea RIGHT !!!

20

My 2008 Grand Marqis is shedding on the hood. Roof and where the roof meets the rear quartes. I can peel the paint off easier than the backing on band aids, Ford Mo Co won't do a thing to repaint it. As of this date 7/27/19 I only have 31.280 original miles on this vehicle.

Our 2007 White Mercury Grand Marquis, which we purchased used from a dealer, had a large spot on the trunk where paint had pealed off. The dealer had it repainted for us. Now 3 years later paint is pealing off in a number of places including a very large spot on the roof above the windshield. Toyota has recently offered (2019) a recall for a similar problem on their vehicles. Why not the Ford Company?

2 people found this helpful.

We bought this car new and it started within 5years the dealership denied responsibility for the bad paint. I had a body shop years ago and I never had any problems like this. I will never buy another Ford product again.. they can Not be trusted to do anything right for their customers.

10

I wonder if you treat the peel spots with a clear sealer to stop for continuing to peal. I have a 2006 doing the same thing....my understanding is that they started using a new body or fixed the problem from 2010 up.....

Unbelievable. I'm looking for a touch up paint for my 07 Marquis and run into this discussion. I love this great car and I'm willing to pay to fix. Any thoughts or info

10

Was just looking around for a fix for this, I was surprised that there were recent posts for this problem. Most of the ones i found were from years ago. They have had this problem for years, started with some of the police depts. and the P71s. From what i understand Ford did fix some of these, as in the comments above, but the problem returned. I think the only true fix would be to strip the entire car and apply the correct sealer, which would cost more than I paid for my car. Its an 03 GM with 100k 1 owner. Starting to peel on the rear post at the window, around the fuel cap and inside the door. I was hoping to find a fix just to get it sealed so it wouldn't go further.Glad to see this post still going , hope someone finds a cheap fix. Also has anyone looked into a wrap?

Maybe what we need to do is bombard Ford in Canada and the US with photos of our vehicles. We should post them on all social media like Instagram and see if we get a response

I have a 2004 with peeling paint. If you look, there are little bubbles all over the hood and trunk only. These are spots where it's peeling. There was a recall but it expired before I bought from previous owner.

My white 2004 Grand Marquis has been peeling and flaking for about 5 years...when I inherited it from my mom's estate several years back, it had 7,000 miles on it. Now it has a little over 100K. Great reliable and economical road car (23+ mpg), too bad it's got the "pox". Thanks for offering me the opportunity to vent!

Mine has just been in the 'C' Pillar area, on both sides. Gently sanding with 320 and it'll keep on peeling to a certain extent. Shot some spray can primer tonight, hopefully to "glue" down the edges. Will shoot some white spray can touch up soon. Found out the hard way that even using the light tack blue tape, I had some more peeling. Ugh. Maybe Frog Tape might work better.

Add me to the list too! 2003 Grand Marquis finished in Vibrant White. The paint is deciding it doesn’t want to be a part of the upper c-pillar area anymore. I try to touch it up as soon as I see it, but over the past 2 years of ownership I hate to admit it’s gotten worse. Car still looks beautiful though!

10

Mine too. I used to see old Chevy Luminas do this all the time. I just bought a 2007 Grand Marquis (runs and drives beautifully) in code HG Smokestone Metallic. Huge flake area on the trunk lid and about 3 spots (so far) on the roof. I was contemplating a repaint, but a wrap might be more cost-effective (and if it's the primer underneath that's the problem, a wrap might last longer as well).

I have a 2004 Grand Marquis and the paint is peeling all over my car. It is really bad too. With everyone having the same problem it is clear that Ford is at fault. Being such a huge and respectable company you would think that Ford would be embarrassed to have all these cars on the road looking as ugly as they do. Maybe we should all put a sign on our cars letting the public know that if they buy one of these cars with the defective paint job, Ford will not make it good. They need to just pay for our cars to be painted.

2 people found this helpful.

AMEN!!!!! This is really such a simple matter for them to fix. And in the long run I think they will come out ahead.

10

Me also, got a 2005 grand marquis in the color of u guessed it! White with 62004 original miles, top of hood ,roof, rear pillars and trunk all losing paint in bigger and bigger chunks! Roof has almost no clear coat left on it as well as a place as big as a basketball on trunk, same way! Car runs supremely good and rides awesome! She looks good at 90 miles an hr, or from 30 yards away.

My 2004 Merc GM Limited is doing the same thing !!!! Ugh ! My grandma bought it off the showroom floor brand new and paid extra for the “Limited” package with included special paint yeah right !!! I now inherited the vehicle as it only has 80,000 miles on it still to this day. My daughter was drove home from hospital after being born in it. (Born in hospital not car lol) . I think something needs to be done about all these cars doing this . Where do we start the process????

I've searched and found instances of it everywhere so anyone who says it's something else has no idea what they're talking about. Newer vehicles have the same problem.
