Subaru outback engine replacement

Question type: Shopping & Pricing
I have a 2005 subaru outback limited , 4
cylinder. My mechanic says it needs a
new engine. He is quoting roughly $5k for
a brand new engine including labor. Does
that sound fair and would it be smarter to
get a rebuild?

That seems like a good price- for a factory engine? yeah- you can price the engine alone by calling your friendly local Subaru dealer parts department- and there will be a lot of labor putting that thing in- especially if it is done correctly- good mechanics are worth their weight in gold- or at least silver-
OK, how many miles are on this car...is it in excellent condition otherwise... really clean interior??? Beautiful exterior?? If NOT, I would advise that you take the $5,000 and get a 2 or 3 years old lease return.....with less than 30,000 miles.. doesn't have to be a Subaru.... after all, your car is going to be 13 years old very soon. Good luck...
Subaru does not sell new engines, just the parts. They may sell rebuilt engines but verify that.
