will a 2009 ej2.5 work in a 2005 with all emmisions

Asked by Thomas Jan 02, 2019 at 03:50 PM about the 2005 Subaru Outback 2.5 i Limited Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2005 Legacy Outback & have been told a 2009 engine is a direct swap. I say the 2009 with variable valve timing won't work in the 2005 and meet emisions. who is correct?

You are right. Don't mix a VVT engine with a regular cam car. In theory you could swap the 09 engine in but you would need all the emissions equipment, wiring and ECU.
