Subaru electrical problem

Asked by Guru2CX6C Feb 26, 2020 at 01:10 PM about the 2003 Subaru Outback Base Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My headlights/dash lights are pulsing to match the rpms of the engine. I've
checked the alternator outside of the car and it's fine. I've replaced the battery.
What else could cause this?

G A's correct. This era Subies are famous for having otherwise sturdy (easily and successfully rebuildable as the bearings and case are rugged) alts that have INTERNAL voltage regulators that become intermittent when hot, eventually failing altogether. You'll see that there are a plethora of rebuilt ones at low prices. Don't be afraid to buy one, as it'll probably last many years on its replaced regulator. Hardest part of this is shimmying in and out the alts with a big screwdriver or crowbar and a gentle tapping with a light hammer. Use lube to mount the rebuilt one. Best, Ern TSG/B
