Usually a small oil leak. I could also be moisture. What color is the smoke?
Well your burning oil it sounds like, there are a couple things that it could be in the N62 engine. On each valve cover there are two covers that say BMW on them remove them. Towards the front of the vehicle on the valve covers there are round plastic looking vents. Remove the plastic covers with a pic and you should see orange rubber seals with a spring under them. Removed them and inspect for any signs of tearing in the seals. These are you diaphrams for you crankcase ventilation system they control how much vacuum is allowed in the system. If torn please replace if they are not orange also replace. The other things your looking into is the oil control rings on the pistons has gone bad and your burning oil. Or whats is most common if the seals are ok the valve stem seals are leaking oil into the combustion chamber. Sorry hope its the seals.
Well done Robert. I was going for simple and clarification and you jumped right in there. Well done!
If not the diaphrams being split and leaking, then look at CVV hose being clogged, especially in extreme cold weather which is hitting the U.S. as this causes same problem, extreme smoke out one side or other, and high consumption of oil, so check your oil levels, and don't drive car until fixed or you will have even more expensive repairs. When you mentioned smoke pattern, it may be condensation which freezes and blocks CCV hoses which then pulls oil into the intake, and if car warms up, it will breath just enough not to smoke. Cold weather is a cars worse enemy.
You are screwed. X5 4.4 engines are just now reaching a point where poorly designed valve seals go bad. Expect to pay $8,000 + for repairs. Next time, buy a Toyota.
Hahaha, toyota, try driving a toyota on the highway when it is windy or when its raining, nothing like Bmw
How I can fix my car is smoking I have a bmw x5 2006
Need more info, smoking all the time, what color is smoke, are you losing oil or water, is it both exhaust sides, smoking at idle or running above 1500RPM. There are many things it could be.

bmw x5 smoke coming both exhaust sides . but when I check the condition in the I drive everything is ok include engine oil level . there is no any error messages in the display . what will be the problem ?
White smoke smells oil
On a 2012 BMW X5 twin turbo are both exhaust supposed to work at the same time? Only one side (left) smoking?
If a turbo fails you will see smoke form the side of which turbo failed.
I am having the same issue of white smoke coming from left side exhaust after idling in traffic signals around 2 mins in my X5 4.4 Biturbo 2012. Any advice/suggestion are welcome other than visit to workshop
It is usually the crack in PVC diaphragm which are located on each valve cover, round and obvious, so pull it out and look for cracks in orange rubber ring, pretty easy to identify, and easy and cheap to replace. If not that, check PVC hose collapse with get spongy soft
CONT: Depending on mileage, and if smoke clears up once driving, if smoke was coming from both exhaust, then valve seals would be indicator. Does engine run well regardless of smoke. Valve seal failure usually effects both exhaust pipes and smoke,
Gururrp5p, only smoke in left pipe and only after sitting, performs beautifully, all the easy stuff has been done. I’m about to clean the valve covers and replace gaskets while I’m in there but aside from ccv, any other ideas? I’m not eating oil either. My level doesn’t drop. Puff of smoke only after a long long idle then it’s gone.
