I have a 2001 bmw x5 4.4i my serpentine belt came off what caused it

Bad tensioner ready to fly apart or something locked up.

That happened to mine and I had to replace the tensioner...it's probably that or a broken belt.

Thanks for the answers but I took it in to Auto Anaology 10100 S. Western here in Chicago and i was told that my water pump is cracked and the power steering pump is cracked i'm wondering if when the belts broke did that cause the pumps to crack so now i need both pumps and a thermostat

I think when the belt broke that caused all your problems. The water pump cracked because it overheated because the belt broke. Once you replace all the parts you should be all set again. Good luck!
