What could be wrong with my truck if it has to roll a couple of feet to engage into four-wheel-drive 2001 F3 50

That's normal in all the 4X4's I've driven. The gears have to line up to engage. Some owner's manuals (Chevy) used to say back up a few feet to lock/unlock the 4x4 system. Takes the load off the drive train, especially on hard dry surfaces.
I got stuck the eather day on 2 wheel drive and want to put it in 4 wheel drive and The transfer case chef or spending to my front and but my tires was not spinning then when someone pulled me out and I drove a couple of feet my four-wheel-drive luck then

Yes, it's always best to have it locked into 4X4 before you really need it. A lot of people panic when they get stuck and tear up their tranny and gear boxes grinding them into gear.
