I've a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid with only 71,000 miles and the transmission failed. Dealer said it has to be replaced. Isn't this very low for a transmission failure???

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Obviously beyond the warranty, but how can this be happening at such a low
mileage.  I'm a very light and careful driver.  Dealer wants $4,500 for a new
transmission.  I'm leaning toward just buying a Toyota!

Has this transmission ever been serviced? This is a CVT transmission and $4500 is not too bad and it will come with a warranty. If you like the vehicle consider having it repaired, if not a Toyota is a good choice.

I apologize - they clarified and said it was the PTU which needed to be replaced, not the transmission. The car was gently used, had oil changes done religiously, and this happened less than two months after the 8 year / 100,000 mile warranty ended.

Retail price on the PTU (transfer case) is $3500 from Ford so $4500 is probably inline with what one would expect.
