Losing power after an hour 1/2 - 2 hrs or driving. Whats the cause?
Asked by JPierce1 Jun 18, 2013 at 10:22 AM about the 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe 2.5 S
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
If I go uphill, say to Vegas from Cali it losese power. I'll go 80 and it will steadily drop to 60. It also has a whirring sound. Nissan dealership says its not my transmission. Co-workers say its my alternator.
Any suggestions help.

I would take a look at the spark plugs and wires. Also, you can try to start the car, while it's running disconnect the negative terminal on your battery and see if the car shuts off. Easy way to tell if the alternator is failing.
Did you ever find the answer to this issue ? I am having same issue.
Mine is doing same thing seems like 75 80 miles an hour for 2 hours or so car lose power like it's in limp mode let car sit at side of freeway for hour or so then it works for about 45 minutes again
I have a 2012 Nissan Altima and had the same issue above. I took it to my Nissan Dealer and here what they discovered. "Tech was not able to duplicate customers concern but upon inspection found CVT fluid to be low. Further diagnosis of low CVT fuild levels tech found saturation from between trans and engine. Tech cleaned off excess fluids and test drove, provided area of the leak coming from torque housing, tech lowered trans and found deformed torque converter seal. Tech removed seal and installed new seal, removed all gasket/sealant from all mating areas and applied new. Torque all mounting points to Nissan specifications, no more leak upon post test drive."
my 2010 Altima has the same issue. i found out that there is a TSB for trans cooler kit but due to my mileage will cost me. I was advised that the part is on backorder from Nissan. This is a safety issue that I hope results in a recall before someone is severely injured or killed.
I pour cold water an transmission then work fine again for 1 1/2 -2 hours again. Happens in flagstaff and hills from knight to Vegas the most there is a transmission heating problem
Like LM4 said you may need a transmission cooler. My girlfriend's 2.5 Altima has the same problem but only when going steeply uphill on a hot day. We've driven to California from Arizona in January and September. In September I couldn't get the car past 55- 60 on some hills and I heard the same whirring you mention. In January we had no problems taking the exact same way there. She drove her to northern Arizona in July and the car wouldn't go past 20 mph on some hills. When the car is driven in Phoenix it doesn't have ANY problems. She took the car to Nissan and they're installing the transmission cooler for free because it's still under warranty but like LM4 said the part is on back order with LOTS of people needing the same part. Hope this helps.
i have a 2009 nissan altima 2.5 s it seems like i spend money n more money to fix it and absoluly has no power to take off slower than shyt i went out for a 8 hour trip and the speed limit was 75 my speed in my car kept going down till 45 and i have to stop for cuple of minutes so it could run again at speed limit i have change the air flow sensor didint work i am frustrated such a new nice car super slow
ubaldo g wt year is your girlfriends car
and how many miles does your girls car has now that they install the cooler does it work better lets say if you are in a red ligth and it turns green and you put your feet in the gas all the way down does it still takes of slow or is it any faster
LM4 how much does the cooler kits cost
Julio, Her car is a 2012. It only has the issue when we go uphill on a hot day and the cars been running for a few hours. The transmission has a sensor that indicates it's overheating so it goes in a "safe" mode which is slow .We don't notice anything wrong with it when we're in Phoenix even though it's hot. We only have the issue going uphill when it's hot. Nissan still hasn't installed the cooler yet. A lot of cars have the transmission fluid run through the radiator somehow to cool it. For some reason the 2.5 Altima doesn't.
dats some bull shyt isin it ubaldo i call my nissan dealership here in nebraska and all they can say tht they gonna check it out why would they make cars that there gonna be having problems and are not gonna be safe to to drive lets say if you are in the freeway going 6o after so long it could be a long trip and you gotta make a quick decision to swich lines but the cars speed its not responding rigth you could be introuble i am gonna be writing a letter to the nissan headquaters
i was checking this thread to find an answer for my wife's '09 2.5. it started having the same power loss on hill's over a year ago on road trips. The transmission just broke on a recent road trip and we had to get the transmission rebuilt out of town. It drove fine all the way home(3 1/2hrs) Now the car is completely losing power after driving for about a quarter or a half mile. I have performed all the relearn procedures that are described in the Chilton manual for after the battery has been disconnected but it hasnt helped. Neither did the new plugs. The manual seems to be pointing to a problem with the PCM. Since the car has no problem idling, it seems like maybe there is a bad sensor somewhere that is preventing the fuel from getting to the motor. I just don't want to take it to the dealership if I don't have to after the 3k I just dropped on it. Anyone had their car get that bad?
I was on my way from Kentucky to ohio last night and my car started to loose power its a 2008 altima 2.5s and when I pulled over to side of road I shut it off for about a minute than started it back up while in park I pushed the gas to rev it up a little and it just stayed and idling speed. rpms didn't move and no sound from engine of it reving up.
When we turned around to head back home 20 minutes later it acted as if nothing was ever wrong with it. Any ideas??? Please message me on here or facebook to kacy Hopkins or Richard harbor JR however we will get the message quicker on facebook
I think we all should contact Nissan and let them know about this issue. this has happened twice to me. Once on a trip to Tahoe and another on a trip to Pismo.
Lasia. Nissan knows about the issue. You should contact Nissan customer service directly. They will probably install it for free but there might be a wait for the part.
Hi I just bought a 2009 Nissan altima. I drove it 30 minutes away and it started losing speed. It did it again today. It has a sound like a screech. Plz someone help. Is it my transmission.

I have a 2010 Nissan altima and while going 75-80mph it loses power. I contacted my local Nissan dealership and the mechanic said he never heard such a thing. My sister has a 2012 with the same issue.
This is the 2nd time my car has done this. Both times coming from Sac to Reno. The semi's are passing me cause I'm going 40-45 with my foot all the way to the floor. I'm calling the mechanic and making an appointment today.
I looked up the Nissan corp on Bibb.com they have an alert to contact them at 1-800-647-7261 option 7. Have vin, mileage on car, dealer bout from, diagnosis of problem handy. I think they know the cvt trams is faulty and they are trying to prevent a huge lawsuit.
I was told to call 1-800-647-7261 #7 I was hesitant but when i googled the number its Nissan. I will be calling today. My car also loses power after driving for a while uphills. Mechanic not the dealership said I need a transmission fan.
Called the Nissan number and they were no help. Acted like they have never heard any complaint similar to mine. I think its time for us all to band together and push the issue with Nissan. They need to fix this issue on everyone's cars.
Go to bbb.com and look under Nissan corp and file a complaint. Nissan has a alert because of all the complaints on there cars.
You can read all the complaints on the better business bureau website about the Altima.

Nissan was no help. If u have more than 65000 miles on your car , they say there is nothing they can do
I have under 65K miles and they were still NO help. I paid almost $700.00 to have it installed.
I keep getting emails concerning this issue because it's summertime and it's hot. The issue is the transmission overheats and it doesn't have a transmission cooler.the transmission has a built- in sensor to slow down when its over heating that's why you lose power and that's why you slow down. My girlfriend and I recently went up hill in Arizona during the summer and we no longer have the issue because the transmission cooler kit was installed. Nissan installed it for free because she threatened to sue them because it is unsafe. It actually is very unsafe if you're driving your car suddenly loses 20 or 30 miles per hour and somebody rear ends you. you should go to Nissan and not to the dealer because they will try not to do anything. She actually had Nissan pay for a rental car for visiting her daughter in northern Arizona while she still had her Altima in Phoenix and the transmisión cooler was on back order.
I called Nissian directly as suggested on here and because I'm out of my warranty they said sorry nothing they could do. I agree it's very unsafe that's why we paid the $700 and had the cooler kit installed. Sucks that Nissian isn't taken care of everyone! I told them when I called Nissian and said I guess we need to get a class action law suit going regarding this issue.
I think that is the only way to wake Nissan up. They're putting all our lives in danger.
Go to car complaints.com there are a lot of prob with the 2009 thru 2013 models
I have a Pontiac grand prix gtp2003. Just had a transmission rebuilt last month ran perfect but the engine light was still on. Last week I was driving foot on gas and all sudden the speed went down the car started slowly getting quit so I pressed on gas and it started driving for few seconds then jumps a few times and 're did it all over again so I pulled over turned it off then it wouldn't restart. The first shop said it's a fuse and another said a fuel pump which is in my tank . I can't afford to pay almost a thousand again so I'm hoping it's something simple if you have any ideas or suggestions please let me know !!!!
THE TRANSMISSIONS GO BAD!! I GOT A FREE NEW TRANSMISSION FROM NISSAN !! Hey, guys I had this same problem in my 2010 altima 2.5 sedan about a year ago. I would lose power on the freeway and had to exit the freeway several times cutting across traffic in a VERY dangerous way. I did my research and so many people have had this problem that Nissan extended the cvt transmission warranty until 120k miles. I went in prepared with a copy of the extended warranty (Google Nissan cvt transmission warranty extension) and let the dealer know that I know exactly what is going on. Threaten them by letting them know all the dangerous situations you have been in because of this. Exaggerate to get your point across that you are the one in charge and demand a new free transmission and have done your research. I did this and ended up with a new free transmission.
Shortly after the transmission went bad and I had Nissan replace it for free because of the extended warranty, my fuel pump went out. I was driving and the car lost power again except this time the car wouldn't turn on. It was a fuel pump problem. Both of those repairs were done around 107k miles. At 114k miles the front bank 1 catalytic converter went bad and was throwing a P0420 code through the check engine light. Now at 118k the car is acting up again. It seems as if the engine or the transmission are not working properly. The car revs fine in park, but when I drive the engine sounds rough and does not increase speed when I floor it. The engine makes a strange sound and at the same time it seems as it could be a transmission problem. I will keep you updated. I am taking the car to the shop on Tuesday after the weekend.
I ended up taking mine to an independent mechanic and had the transmission fan installed. It cost $700.00. Nissan wouldn't help me and I felt this was a huge safety issue and not worth our life! The information above you told me to google would apply to my car but it states it ended in 2010. I will NEVER buy another Nissan they don't take care of their customers. They should have a recall for this item!
It should be Recalled. I'm still waiting for my transmission cooler to arrive since 2mos.ago and today my 2008 Altima has that problem.and I'm still waiting.
I remember reading the part was on back order but my mechanic got it in less then a week. Seems like Nissan is trying to pull a fast one. Keep on them! I totally agree should be recalled!
This weekend had the same problem and have had the problem before. This time almost got into an accident due to it. Could not accelerate to safely avoid the other vehicle. Ironically the other vehicle was a newer version of the Altima. Something needs to be done before someone dies.
We had the fan installed and so far it has seemed to help. It wasn't cheap though and we had to pay for it, Nissan wouldn't. I think it was $500.00

My Nissan Teana (Altima) 2008 250XE developed a problem of starting. Firstly, it burned the gasket and the head of which got repaired by mechanic and engineer and the vehicle started moving. After taking a long drive around the city, the car stopped when backing home. What happened is that after climbing a low hill on the highway, the speedometer dropped from 100 to 0 (zero) and could not accelerate anymore even when I pressed the accelerator. It stopped and I parked it at the side of the highway. It had to be toward back home. The mechanic has been working on it but no success, changed battery but no success. It won't start at all. What can I do or what is your suggestion?
My car seems to have all the same problems as above but on mine when the overheating seems to begin, my rpm's suddenly rev up and down for a while. Does this happen to anyone else?
2012 Sentra, 100,500 miles on it. Last week started to rev high on hills, but only on my way home from work and would slow way down. Service Engine light came on, took it to dealer and they said nothing wrong, reset light. This was Saturday. Today the light came back on and the problem started again. It is warmer today than it had been Sunday or Monday. Live in Massachusetts. Could this be transmission cooler problem mentioned above?
Southernangel answered 8 years ago
So guys just for the record there is an ongoing issue with the altima which has a CVT transmission. If you own one which I do a 2012 they extended the warranty to 120,000 miles for any that have the CVT in it. It is an ongoing issue. It is posted on the service board call make an appointment. I have been having the same issue with mine around 65-70mph and sometimes with cruise control on it looses speed. If your NS cvt 2 fluid is low it will cause the issue. I hope this helps with talks ongoing issues
When I called the dealership they said my warranty was up because I had over 35K miles. I paid for the fan on my transmission and haven't (knock on wood) had any issues.
Southernangel answered 8 years ago
@jimmtaylor. It states that it is on those cvt issue. They have extended the warranty. It is posted on their message board. I have called and confirmed and I also have a friend who works for nissan who initially told me about the warranty have been extended.
Thanks if I have further issues I will have to look deeper into this. Thank you!

Just had this happen to me Friday on my way to WI. Then again yesterday on my way back. On the way there it happened with an hour and a half until I was at my destination on the way home it happened an hour and a half until I was home. Had to pull over let it sit for 10 minutes then started it and everything was fine period no warning signs on the dash... Was doing about 80 miles an hour and pedal to the floor will not accelerate RPMs would not move. Car did have an awful whine sound to it when it was happening. After reading this board I just did some research and Nissan has extended the warranty to 10 years/120k miles. It also States in their letter to the Nissan owners that anybody that has paid out of pocket to have this taken care of they will reimburse you for your costs. You can go to www.nissanassit.com.
Michelle, Did you get the transmission cooler put on your car and if so were you reimbursed for it? I am having the same issues. Brandon Gaona
No I called Nissan and they were very unhelpful. NO reimbursement.
Michelle_M answered 8 years ago
@Bgaona I'm passed the cooler kit. My transmission is shot. A blown trans with no prior transmission problem. Its sitting at the dealer. I have already dealt with Consumer Affairs. Their responses are scripted. Today I filed a claim with BBB, Illinois Attorney General, NHTSA, and called 2 class action attorneys. When I get home I'm calling the 3 major news networks here in Chicago.I have an extended warranty and they won't pay for a new trasmission. They want me to get a used with 61k miles. They said if I want a used I have to pay the difference but they'll still pay the labor of $1375. I ask nissan to pay $1740 and they refuse. I assured Nissan this isn't the end of it. Stay tuned......a class action needs 40 people. I may need your support!! I am determined to make them take accountability for willfully and knowingly using defective and unsafe transmissions......100% pure negligence!!!
Michelle_M answered 8 years ago
**Should say if I want the new transmission no miles I pay the difference.
I'm in, I think its horrible that we are putting our families in these unsafe cars and Nissan isn't being held accountable.

I have been having the same issue with my 2009 Altima 2.5. I was thinking of just going and having the transmission fluid flushed. From what I'm seeing it's not going to fix the issue. Does anyone know if Nissan has started helping if not I'm in on the suit.

After reading your responses I am sickened at the fact that I bought my daughter a used 08 Rogue that is now having the problems you all have described. I have had $500 worth of sensors replaced and still transmission trouble. She drives 4 hours home to East Tennessee with the Smoky MTN. Hills and on about hour 2.5 it starts slowing down and the pedal is to the floor and it won't go more than 35 or 45. So now I guess I will start checking on this cooler kit. It is very dangerous on I-75-I-40 to have your car doing that. We have 121k miles on it.
Read all the comments ans maybe you can get some resolution. I'm sorry we are all in the same situation, it's annoying!

I have a 2005 Altima that I just got an today I just had to call triple A to come get me an my son off he side of the highway. After about a half hour driving the car just stopped accelerating an lucky I had to roll to the side to the emergency lane. The car will run an doesn't stutter like it will die out or anything. It just won't go an will roll maybe 2 mph. I put the pedal to the floor an the nothing but a roll happens. This is dangerous an a newborn in the car. I've read everything an I'm not sure it it's the transmission but it seems like it cuts gas from the engine or something. Another page I read it's a sensor that the brake could be going bad an the sensor sets into limp mode that it's not sure if the brake has been applied so the car wants to stop accelerating.
Michelle_M answered 8 years ago
I can assure you it is the transmission. I had no stutter or any warning for that matter. I was simply driving on the highway and went to change lanes and it wouldn't accelerate. When I got home and took it to Nissan within hours they confirmed it was the transmission.
@Michelle_M After reading through the threads i gotta say i am GLAD that im not alone!! I have a 2009 Nissan Sentra. When I bought it brand new off the lot at a Nissan dealer, I took it to Vegas. Going up hills it started to lose power. I pulled over and little sit for a but. I looked under the hood looking to see if I could find anything. When I came back to California I went to the dealer and asked why it did that. They said the CVT fluid over heats and it's normal in these cars. He said these cars aren't meant to drive long distances like to Vegas. I said well next time I buy a car then I have to ask how far can I drive it? BS!!!! In 2014 my catalytic went out. Nissan wouldn't fix it bcuz it was out of warranty till another mechanic said I was still covered under the emissions state warranty. Nissan finally fixed my catalytic in March 2014. In Nov 2014 my engine blew out. Nissan wanted to charge me $6k to fix it. I took it to a different mechanic. After the engine was rebuilt the car still drove funny. The mechanic that rebuilt the said the catalytic was bad. This was in March 2015. I was upset bcuz Nissan had supposedly fixed right b4 the engine blew out. I took it back to Nissan and they refused to fix the catalytic bcuz it was out of warranty. Called Nissan's consumer affairs and they refused to help me. It's now Oct 2016 my engine blew out again. I had a new 1 put in. Driving to San Francisco my car lost power once again. I was driving in the truck lane going 40 mph. I couldn't get off the freeway cuz there was no gas stations for miles. When I finally did, I let it sit for about 30 min. I got back on the freeway and it drove as if nothing was wrong with it. So damn frustrated bcuz of all the money I've spent on this car. Mind u they keep telling me something is still wrong with the catalytic. I wish I knew my rights and if there's anything that can be done in my situation.

Same issues! 2009 Nissan Altima. I'm well over the mileage now. Where do I sign the petition?
Is anyone having the acceleration issues on a 2015 Nissan Altima? Not sure if it's the same as the issues mentioned above.
I'm having the same problem with my 2014 nissan maxima....does anyone know if they have recalled this part yet?
I had to have a engine fan installed if I remember right its been a couple years. I remember it ain't cheap.

We just experienced the exact same power loss with our 2012 Altama. Took it to the dealership and explained exactly what was happening and referenced this online conversation. Fortunately, they said it was under warranty and they installed the transmission cooler free of charge. We go pick it up this afternoon.
I'm having the same problem everyone else has. I have a 2010 Altima, drove it to Tucson, AZ had that problem, drove it to Las Vegas this weekend and yup had the same problem. Had me driving 40mph! Let's sue the dog shit out Nisaan I've been dealing with this since I've had this car!! I've been too nice and now I'm ready to contact the news about this. They refused to help me kept saying it was a oil cooling issue and now my transmission is no good. It's a CVT faulty transmission issue, don't let them lie to you. How do we get a class action lawsuit going??

I had the transmission fan (I believe) installed and so far it has fixed the problem. That was done about 2-3 yrs ago. It wasn't cheap but well worth it. I think it was between $300-$500 from my memory. Originally the part was back ordered but my mechanic got it quick.
So a car needs an after market device to make it run correctly. This is something Nissan should pay for not me.
Couldn't agree more. Nissan is aware of the problem but I couldn't get them to pay for mine. They gave me all kinds of lines such as your warranty is up, you have never had service done here etc. I even reported it to the BBB. They need to do a recall but I don't ever see that happening.
I am having the same problem with my 2012 Rogue. It's scary when you are driving on the freeway and lose power. It has happened to me 3 times (extremely hot weather and after 1-1/2 hours of driving) and this can cause a VERY serious accident. I just read this thread and will be calling Nissan tomorrow.

The problem is if they say you need this extra part Cooler or whatever then that is pretty much admitting guilt their car was made correctly. I promise you I will never ever even consider buying another Nissan and would sell the 2012 except I don't want some other person having this issue. I would be as bad as Nissan but exactly what they are doing.

2011 Nissan Altima 2.5s Sedan. CVT Transmission is equipped with a fail safe/ "safe mode" that activates when the transmission gets to hot. This will cause the car to enter into limp mode meaning that the car has poor acceleration after 2500-3000 rpm and will not go above 60 mph. This is to ensure you do not completely ruin your transmission. When the fluid entering the transmission is not adequately cooled, the band in the CVT heats up and "stretches", allowing for playing on the gears in the CVT. If left unattended for too long this will cause the band to break. Hence the fail-safe. This can be noticed by an audible whine coming from the left side of the vehicle. At this point a transmission replacement is already needed. Adding a transmission cooler will only band-aid the issue. For those that cannot afford to have a transmission cooler installed by a shop or are unable to install it themselves, there is a youtube video for a 2007-2012 altima sedan that gives a rough idea of how to install the cooler. To buy a little time, as much as it sucks on a hot day, try turning on the defroster or heater high/hot. This will pull some of the heat from the engine bay allowing your transmission to run slightly cooler and don't exceed speeds of 65-70 mph and don't push the car to hard when driving up hill. The loud whine heard from the driver side of the vehicle is the CVT.

Please add me to petition on this claim. My Nissan Juke 2011, 60K mls has exact same issues with losing its power after driving for about an hour at 70mls/h speed. I am often driving in Florida from Tampa to Miami, when overheating begins and rpm's suddenly up and down for a while. Service engine light comes on, dealer resets the light. Soon after the light came back on. This stuff continues for 6 months now. golovinaoksana2@gmail.com

Most of CVT boxes doing this according to my research. I also have a Nissan with a CVT transmission but it's not doing this. However, most of people was able to solve this problem by replacing the secondary speed sensor in the transmission.
Ploberjott answered 6 years ago
2011 Altima -Started our a year ago losing power the further I drove it. The speed would drop from approx 70 mph to 55 on the interstate. This caused several near wrecks on the interstate. I woukd pull over & wait 10 minutes and the car would drive fine for another 45 min. Then it started progressing to shorter distances & inclines. I changed the battery, plugs, wires, af sensor, filter, oil, coolant, alternator, etc. no relief. Recently, after driving for about 45 minutes, the car started reving up the RPMs while on the interstate to the red line. This would last about 5 min, then lose power. Then it would drop below 50 and continually lose speed till I stop. It would whine on the interstate. I could pull over for 5-10 minutes and restart to get power to finish my commute. However, numerous times I’d come off the interstate to make a turn & lose power almost being hit by other cars due to no power. The pedal to the floor but no acceleration. Brought it to Nissan who said they have not heard of any of these issues, but my transmission needs replacing for $5500 or I could get a used one for $4800. Over the past week, the air conditioner has just went out. To repair it will cost $1030. I now have a paid off 2011 Nissan Altima with 140,000 miles which blue books for $7300 but needs$6600 worth of work. Unbelievable!! I was a huge Nissan supporter, with my last 3 new cars being Nissans. However, I will never purchase a Nissan ever again and I will discourage anyone from purchasing one in the future.
I have a hard time believing the dealership that they haven't heard of the problem. We had a transmission fan put on and the problem has been solved. Knock on wood. I think it was about $700, better then $5500. Good Luck
I am in the same position for over a month now. About 1 year ago, I lost power to the whole vehicle and was stranded in the middle of the street. I had to pay about $1000 to have this issue fixed. Now, I am losing power when I accelerate over 60 mph when I have been driving the car for about 44-48 minutes. I live in RHODE ISLAND and right now, it is about 30-32 degrees out (throwing this out there just to show that even if its cold out, issue still occurs). I have already signed the petition but please add me to the class action lawsuit j_ram1rez@hotmail.com (Jose Ramirez) It's unfortunate that it has to get to this level. Thank You.
Hi interesting thread. Not sure if it's still active but if you can add me as well. After driving for about 30 minutes my RPM's get capped at around 2500-3000 and I have to pull over for 30 minutes to let it cool and start operating normal again. Nicholas@DesertComputerAgents.com
2014 maxima same issue that only happened once on the first hot day of the season. I bought a transmission oil cooler online for $80.00 and installed it with a fluid change. Now car is fully functional even on a hot day. Nissan did not add enough cooling for the CVT TRANSMISSION.
I have a 2009 Nissan Altima that if I drive for more than 30 minutes during the hot months will not accelerate due to the CVT Transmission problem. Make sure you sign this petition to get things rolling against Nissan: Go to Web Link https://www.change.org/p/jose-munoz-nissan- should-recall-and-replace-faulty-cvt-transmissions? recruiter=587079809&utm_campaign=signature_rec eipt&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petiti on AND THEN search "Make Nissan stand behind their defective CVT Transmissions!!!"
You need a fan installed on your transmission. It cost me about $500 if I remember right. Mine has been better since I had that done.
Why should we have to have a fan installed for a defective Transmission that Nissan built that overheats. That is like buying a car and your AC stops working and they tell you, you need to buy an aftermarket compressor to cool your original compressor. I am going to sell this POS to a used car place. But I can promise you I will never consider a Nissan again.
I sold the car ages ago ladies and gents. It was too dangerous to drive to be honest. And I refuse to endanger my life over a faulty transmission. Probably won't buy another Nissan, but it is a serious issue. Also, with the high mileage of my vehicle, Nissan replied that they could not help. A new transmission costs 5 Grand. Personally, that does not fit with my budget. But it was a decent ride while it lasted, however, every person I see driving a Nissan ; I tell them to check their transmission and other faulty parts that come with the vehicle. Best suggestion I can give the people who purchased this vehicle.......PAPER TRAIL! Go weekly to different dealerships. Save your receipts and stay safe people.
Nissan is just garbage, that's why they're so cheap and you see people rollin around in one. I had to get rid of mine 1 year ago and upgraded to a Challenger. Best decision Ive ever made. Don't buy anything with a CVT transmission
Same problem with my wife's 2008 altima. It's nerve-wracking and dangerous when I try to merge and can't accelerate at all, or when I'm driving up a hill and it starts dropping from highway speeds to 40 mph. I hope there is a class action lawsuit soon that forces a recall.
same prob with my 2011 altima. if they install the fan they admit fault, sue, sue, sue

Add me to the class action. I recently bought 2009 Nissan altima of course used came back up the Cajon pass today with my daughters in the car lost acceleration to 40 mph with pedal to the floor. It was 103 to 99 degrees today. Thank God I was able to pull over to the slow lane after just about being rear ended. Drove 15 miles home with hazard lights on and Thanking God we didn't get hit. busybee406@yahoo.com
After two years of dealing with problems with deceleration with the Tranny all I did was replace the fluid and it works like new again.

I just experienced the sameness exact issue everyone else is complaining about on my 2009 Altima. I was just going up a hill in Colorado and my car all of a sudden slowed down to 30 mph. I had to turn around and come home. Let me know if the lawsuit is still going. What a sham!!!
Add me to the class action law suit too please! I just bought my 2008 altima 2.5 a little over a month ago and drove it from Vegas to reno and it took over 12 hours to do this 7 hour drive.. super dangerous!! Btlewis223@gmail.com thank you
Omg this is so crazy to see ALL these post about the same issues. So I have a 2016 Nissan Altima and literally I am dealing with the same thing. Car doesn’t even have 20k miles on it yet. It is at the dealership since Friday and Saturday they told me car was fine and I could pick it up and I’m like NO car is not fine it is a hazard. On Friday I barely got out the way of a semi truck, live in Florida not big hills but it does get pretty hot in summer. This is the second time in a month I’ve taken the car to dealership for them to say car is fine and shows no signs of issues.

Have the same problem with my 2011 Altima. Brought it to dealer who was not very forthcoming about the warranty extension. Then told me the extension started in 2010 but did not include 2011. The number told me that the extension did not apply to all Altima's because it depended on who manufactured the transmission. I was aghast, seems like they were searching for a reason to avoid discussing the warranty extension. How do I join the lawsuit?

The transmission cooler unit is only $40 and it doesn't take a full blown mechanic to install it on your car with a CVT. I've had this problem several times, but never understood it. Now I do, I'm going to put the $40 part on my car.
Not happy at all. 2011 Sentra is at the dealers ,,for the same problem y'all are talking about ,,I couldn't pass a dead dog on the road for nothing the shop calls me back this morning and says ,oh you need a new transmission,,we removed the oil pan and found metal shavings ,,which I havnt seen yet mine you,,so how much is this going to cost now I ask stupidly ,,,$4000 !,, Lol,,,I told them to put the car back together and I will pay you your $400 tomorrow when I come down there,, After reading all your text and taking some asprin,,I've decided to stay in my room in Reno for another night ,,
This is very dangerous uphill once you are uphill experiencing this and it is quite terrifying. Happened a couple of times had my whole family on board. Crazy. May be they are still waiting for a casualty or someone to be statistics before they start a recall or do something when the press and tv become interested.

Add me please to the class action suit. 2010 Altima 2.5. Starts jerking then doesn't move. very dangerous on road. ggalh@cox.net
I have a 2011 Altima has the same problem. Car go’s into safe mode after running for a long period of time going over 60mph. Loses power. Thru reading this thread and calling Nissan service dept locally they recommended installing a transmission cooler unit on. Problem fixed! But with that being said I will never buy another Nissan product again. Trading mine in this month. There actually having the same problem with brand new Jules! Nissan Cvt’ s are crap!
nissan put on a machine to test mine, they said it was slipping. wrong, the tech told me the cvt trans was faulty but would not go on record. they said a new trans with the cooler for 5600.00!! i asked why put the cooler on and they admitted even the new cvt would have the same issue. its a bad trans, period. ive driven 5000miles since then. as long as its not hot outside and im not driving for over an hour, no problem. nissan has recalled the cvt and extended the warranty on other models but not mine. trading it in and would not drive another nissan for free!! pure crap with no recall, no govt intervention. guess someone has to die before action is taken. again, pure crap. stay away from nissan.
We have been close to an accident 3 times in this 2009 Nissan Altima. It's really awful that Nissan has not done anything about this situation. Especially knowing that this huge problem exists and what the consequences could be. I guess they are willing to take a chance and spare a human life just to make a dollar! I hope that no one looses their life in a faulty car that Nissan refuses to recall and fix. Even if you invest the money to fix the CVT it does not resolve the issues completely and it also voids any warranty!
I contacted the legal team that is going after Nissan regarding these horrible CVT's. They sent me a form and listed me as part of the lawsuit, but warned that this litigation will take YEARS and not to expect anything special. That made sense to me. But you guys who are interested in pursuing Nissan, call this office and ask for a form so you can be included. This is happening to my 2009 Altima!!!! I lose power going uphill! I’m in CA and I need to drive back to Vancouver, Canada Any suggestions??
If the CVT is not failing, then the transmission fluid is getting too hot and the CVT is going into a safe mode where it protects itself and the car loses acceleration and steady power. It takes a $40 transmission cooler, easy to install, from Amazon.
I had the same problem with my 2120 Nissan Altima. When traveling uphill on the interstate uphill for a prolonged time, the car would rapidly decelerate from 75 mph to 45 mph. I took it in to the service department and they recommended putting in a new cooler and update the software on the control module on the CVT to prevent the transmission from overheating.

liz20holley@gmail.com please add me to the lawsuit I have the same "safe mode" problem with my 2011 Nissan Altima. It only does it at high speeds if I put it in "slop stick" I can manually override it. I put the color on the cvt it did NOT help. It only does it on the interstate, but not all the time.
It's the crappy Transmission.... I sold that POS to CARMAX and will never drive or recommend a NISSAN ever again...
Same issue (with Nissan altima 2012) of not going above 65K after 2 hr drive. Please also add me in lawsuit darshanyo@yahoo.com

Same thing was happening to me for a while. I decided to go with cheapest fix first, in my opinion, and got a transmission flush. Haven't had the problem in years. Even went to San Diego from LA without no signs of power loss. I think making sure your transmission fluid levels are correct is key.
I, have a 2009 Nissan Altima and went to visit family in Yrecka Ca from tracy ca and my car kept losing power I, would be going 65 then drop to 45 and would have to pull over and shut the car off for a minute the restart then it would work fine for about 5 miles and then drop down again so I pulled over again and turned off engine for 1/2 hr then started car again got on freeway it was starting to look good on the road for 1 hr but I stayed in slow lane all of a sudden a Simi truck was behind me and the all of a sudden dropped from 65 - 45 mph I, had to pull over because if I didn't the Simi truck would have hit me and hurt everyone in car especially my little girl if 8 yr old in back seat!!! Please can anyone had any near death misses with there Nissan Altima. HELP!!! (Maria)
I had the same problem with my 2010 Nissan Altima. When driving uphill on the highway for an extended period, the car would suddenly decelerate to 45 mph from 75 mph despite me pushing on the accelerator to the floor. I took this in to the dealership but they would not reimburse me for the transmission problem. They installed a cooler which solved the problem but at a cost of over $600. The class action lawsuit mentioned by Chad Stout https://hgdlawfirm.com/nissan-faulty-transmission-suit/ is no longer accepting clients and it appeared to be limited to Alabama and Florida residents.
Another funny thing is that about a few weeks ago, I was passing another Nissan Altima while going uphill on the highway. The other Altima was only driving 45 mph and everyone was giving the guy the dirty look because the speed limit was 75.
GuruXR6BL, Did the Cooler help it? How long ago was that installed and have you had the problem since? The reason I ask is because I heard that after the cooler was installed, within time the same problem came back.
Jester, the cooler helped. I had it installed last summer and so far haven't had any problems. That being said, I won't be buying a Nissan again for the next time I look at a replacement.
GuruXR6BL, Okay cool. PUN fully intended. I'm looking for the cheapest fix and then unloading this Nissan POS asap. Thanks!
I have a 2011 Nissan Altima having the same problem... Does anyone have a link to where I can find this transmission cooling kit? From everything I am seeing, doing the work myself seems to be the cheaper method :/
This is what I found with Google: https://drivinglife.net/best-transmission-cooler/
Please add me to the lawsuit...my 2012 Altima has had these issues on the freeway and it is scary to be traveling 75 mph and then drop to 40 mph hour with my foot all way down on the accelerator with just enough time to get safely out of the way.! Truck drivers were passing me! I have to break my long distance driving into 1 hour increments and 30 minute rest breaks for the car to reboot. This is a big safety issue! ypallesi@gmail.com
2012 Nissan Altima having same issue, 3x’s now. It always occurs at the same place, on the Grapevine heading to LA. My car goes from 75 to 60 than slowly loses power. I pull over and restart the car and continue my drive with no other issues. I do have 150k miles on the car and it started around 140k. Sadly, it may be time for a new car, I just put $3k worth of work into it and was hoping to go another 50k miles. This is my 2nd Altima but it may be my last.
Its the CVT trans. Nissan has admitted as much by offering to put the fan on the trans. the government must act before someone gets killed then the car dies out while doing 65 in the fast lane.
Smh. Thanks for all the great responses given. unfortunately my car is a 2012 Nissan Altima 112k miles and I just started having the same problem a few months ago. Will see what I can do to get this fixed by nissan for free. Thanks again y’all.
If a miracle happens and Nissan fixes it for free, please keep us informed. When i took my car into nissan, they told me the trans was 'slipping" which is a lie. They would replace for 5 grand and put the fan on, I asked if you're putting in a new tranny, why the fan? They said in case it happens to the new trans. so, they admit even a new trans will have the same issues. Bottom line is it's a faulty trans and they know it. The government has to take action and force nissan to do a recall, but we all know they won't do it until a certain number of people have to die first for it to become an issue. Screw you nissan, i would not piss on you if u were on fire!!!!!

I was having the same issue with my 2012 Nissan Altima 2.5s. Whirring/high pitched him, loss of power/safe mode, and not going over 3k rpms. I eventually had my service engine soon light come on throwing the code p0744 (torque converter clutch circuit). I added a full can of SeaFoam Trans Tune and it cleared my light as well as fixed my other issues. In my case I believe it to be material in my transmission fluid messing with the torque clutch solenoid so I plan to have the tranny serviced/flushed to totally resolve the issue. Just thought I'd post my fix since so many seem to have this issue and it might just save someone else some money when attempting to fix their car. The can of trans tune is under $15.
go sell ur crap somewhere else, spamming when folks have real issues sucks and so do u!! asswipe
Matt, my 2012 Nissan Altima has the issue. I had my tech replace the Transmission Fluid with the Nissan recommended fluid about a week ago and I'm having no problems. The car transmission is actually running better overall.
Jester22, I took mine in and asked them to replace the transmission fluid for me and they said that they wont do it because it has over 100k miles on it with no previous transmission flushes. They stated that if they do it now it could lock up the engine. Did they tell you anything similar before they changed your fluid?
GuruHD3YC, Sounds like a bunch of BS! I had a friend/mechanic do it for me and it's been running better since. Before I did it, I couldn't drive more then 45 mins and it would start acting up. Now, I can drive it for over 3 hours and it's performing better than before.
Jester22, thanks for the info! I think I'm just gonna have to find the right mechanic in that case.
GuruHD3YC, I am going to see how it goes for a bit. Then if I need to, I will have the Transmission Cooler installed next. That will be the end of the line though. I think that will cost around $500-$600 for that job. I am not going to the extent of putting in a new transmission at $5000. Unless Nissan rights the wrong and does it for free. I'll be honest, up to this point it's been an awesome car. But, now I've lost faith.
So far so good since I had the Transmission Fluid changed out for the certified Nissan Transmission fluid. The car has more pep and is no longer going into the safety mode. I have not driven for more than 2 hours yet, but the issue was happening just 45 mins into my drive. Now it is at least lasting for over an hour.
If you have a any tips tricks or anything to do with car runs for 30min then loss of power to 60 max but only in evening.... HELP send me a txt 8598689279
Guru18F5S, Change transmission fluid to the recommended Nissan Brand. That's what I've done and so far so good.
@UbaldoG how did you get them to cover it? Nissan is telling me now that my warranty was already expired when I had my first issue (2016 with 113k miles), which was not since it was extended to 120k and 10 years. My fluid was burnt and I've had it in the shop numerous times and had them tell me putting the cooler in way probably a waste of money. No one mentioned or followed the bulletin about putting in the cooler kit and now I've had my fluid changed 3 times for no reason and still have to get the new cooler kit put in.
Nissan just fucked it all up... how could they design such a thing and called it a car.... this is risk to life
Because profit margins and shareholders matter more than making a decent product. So they dont give a damn about you or your issues with the car, just that bottom line. That's why they put a scooter tranny in a car. Gotta save that $200!
Literally had the same issue twice. Just happened yesterday! This is honestly infuriating. I had my transmission flushed worked for a few months n now that it's hot 104° it started acting up. Add me to the lawsuit too thaina3000@gmail.com
Experienced this for the first time yesterday and almost had a serious accident on the highway. I drive a 2012 Nissan Juke with 80K miles; zero problems with it until now. Cruise control for an hour at 75 mph, hot day, car starts making a loud whining noise while losing power at the same time. No warnings lights, temp gauge looked normal. Car slowed to 45 and had to get over on the shoulder until we could exit to access road. My husband thought maybe just cruise control burned out and turned it off; it was ‘slipping’ at times, even on a slight incline in cruise control. Car started driving normally again after a couple of minutes of turning cruise control off. Same scenario repeated not long after, so we pulled over and stopped. Restarted a couple of mins later and it drove like nothing was wrong. Looks like from reading this entire thread that it may need a transmission cooler kit for it’s crappy CVT tranny...and Nissan should pay for it. But it looks like that ain’t happening! I guess I will begin my quest in looking for the part to be installed....after we make the limp home today in prayer the whole way it doesn’t just break down completely. Thanks for all the info! Nissan needs to issue a recall!
My daughter has a 2007 Altima. Transmission went out at 100k miles. I took it to three dealerships and all told me to talk to the hand. I was well within mileage warranty but was over by a year on time of warranty. One of the techs told me that Nissan would work with me. LOL I called corporate and they basically told me to pound sand. I have talked to several mechanics and EVERYONE knows that this is a bad transmission. Recently my daughter told me that the engine is making a high pitched noise and that the car doesn't accelerate when going above 70 mph. Nissan is a crappy company and would rather see people die than fix their problem. They know that it will bankrupt them. I'm all in for the class action lawsuit and will be calling the number posted above.
Nissan 2014 Juke. Same issue. In the heat, passing 18 wheeler, speed dropped from 80 to 45 in seconds. I went back in comments a few years and it looks like Nissan is only mfr not using 4 port cooling. Since cvt is on almost every make now, does anyone know if this issue is only Nissan or is it an issue with other mfrs?
Same issue with my 2012 Nissan Altima. Has happened at least ten times on drives lasting greater than 2 hours. My car will go from 80 to 60 and I lose the ability to accelerate past that speed. Bottom line is Nissans CVT engines are unsafe, unreliable. Nissan needs to make this right and fix all of these vehicles. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone has died as a result of this faulty transmission.

Same issue as so many here. 2012 Altima coupe 2.5... after driving for about 2 hours on the freeway I lose the ability to accelerate. Went to the dealer and they told me I need a new Mass Air Flow Sensor and that it would fix the issue. 700 dollars later, the problem is still there. My car has 125,000 miles on it so no warranty can fix anything. Everything would have to be out of pocket, and even then may not fix the issue. Never buying a nissan again.

Same acceleration issue as everyone else here. 2012 Altima. If there is any legal action taken or going to be taken, please count me in. aprilkkTX@gmail.com
I experienced The same issue with my 2012 altima recently. I was traveling from AZ to Northern Cali going thru the grapevine my car started to lose power going up hill. It was a very scary experience as I was traveling with a toddler. Also there was no warning lights all gradges were normal . Ending up pulling off in the middle of no where with no phone service was scared to shut off car but did as it was making a sound. Car restarted got back on highway with hazards lights on driving 40 to next town on Bakersfield. Ending spending nite for them to say they found nothing. Next morning car was good to Sacramento but had same issues driving home going uphill. Please count me in on class action. mzmimi480@gmail.com. Nissan needs to be accountable I am sure that accidents and possible loss of life have occurred due to this dangerous mishap. I will also go on bbb and report and send and email to Nissan. I was traveling for a funeral and my nite cost me close to $400 for room food and to have car looked at.i am sadden and upset reading these post now know that Nissan is aware but have chosen to do nothing.
Experiencing the same issue. After 45min to 1hr drive at more than 65mph the car would start whining then eventually lose power. It happens sooner if im driving uphills. Not only that, after the first time this happened, the vehicle started jittering sometimes when accelerating. Which makes me think that the trans got damaged by that drive. I drove from NY to GA. almost 1k miles nonstop. I managed to drive back at 60mph the entire 900+ miles without experiencing the same issue. I went to a Transmission mechanic because i was told by my mechanic (who doesn't do transmissions), and the trans mechanic told me to clean the battery terminals (that had rust due to battery leak), change the battery that was leaking, and change the TCM (transmission control module), and if that doesnt work, i have a bad trans which costs around 3.4k. I only changed the TCM and cleaned the battery terminals with a betal brush and cleaning detergents sold at autozone. The battery is less than a year old, and it was leaking (i think) because it was not fastened properly and leaked a little bit when driving on bumpy roads. The trans mechanic did a OBD check with an advanced computer (basic OBD readers wont read these issues), and found that there were instances that the transmission (or TCM) did not communicate with the car computer. He reset the errors and told me to fix the issues mentioned above. I still have not tested the car on a long drive yet after doing what the trans mechanic told me, but i did experience the jitter (not as strong as before) ;(. I will change the cooling fan, and clean the cooling radiator (if its not leaking, no need to change it) before trying the long drive since it feels like the trans does overheat. I will come back for an update after i do these fixes. Not bothering calling Nissan since my Altima is '09 and 118k miles.
I found the answer to my issue (read comment right above).. A simple transmission fluid change!! Around 5 mechanics (one "transmission specialist") told me to get rid of the car, and i refused to listen to them. I used castrol (stinky) CVT transmission fluid and my car runs much smoother. The CVT transmission for my Altima 09 2.5S, according to the manual, has to be changed every 60k miles, i was at 120k, so yeah. my car is at 126k at the moment and i plan to ride it until 200+. Unless you've tried it already, change that transmission fluid, NO MECHANIC AROUND me knew what or how to fix. They all just discarded it. Now, please do not keep running your car with this issue, it will damage the transmission since the fluid does not lubricate and that's why the engine whines after some miles in the highway. My transmission had too much tiny metal on the fluid, which means my transmission suffered because i ran it like that. But it was necessary for me to figure out because no one had a clue. On your next car, don't get anything with CVT, not because they're shit, but because the mechanics are shittier and don't know jack.
