i have a 2008 grand prix v6. when i start the car it idles up normal then the rpms immediately drop down low and lugs for a second or two and picks back up and idles fine. there are no other issues.

Its does sound like your MAF by what you are describing. You may want to clean the throttle boby with a good cleaner like CRC first...

Stick with your original plan. Find the problem, then fix it. That will save you money by not randomly buying parts and hoping the problem goes away. have the trouble codes read on your car. There will be information stored in your car's computer which will tell you what is wrong.
