If there was a puddle of coolant under the car, there is definitely a failure somewhere on the cooling system. Inspect the water pump. The seals or bearings can go without any warning and fail. This will typically lead to coolant blowing out of the water pump. The obvious thing to check is the radiator. Look for corrosion and leaks and inspect upper and lower radiator hose as well as the hoses that run to the heater core.

Agree. Something is leaking and you need to find and fix that before you drive it any more. Could also be the plastic elbows in the lines to the heater. They often fail. Even if they haven't have them replaced while you're fixing things. There's also quite likely air trapped in the cooling system. That happens all the time and needs to be bled out before it will cool/heat properly. If you're not up to it yourself, you need a shop to go through the system and get it fixed up. Probably nothing huge, but it does need to be maintained.
