Steering Wheel Stiff/Hard to Turn

Asked by Daveion Jul 15, 2024 at 07:39 PM about the 2008 Saturn Aura XE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My steering wheel locked up while driving
home yesterday, and it was very hard to turn
the wheel left or right. When I arrived at home,
I started to see smoke coming from under the
hood. I don’t know where the smoke is
coming from. I checked the power steering
reservoir to see if it needed power steering
fluid, and it was empty. Now today, I turned on
the car to see if the steering problem was still
present, and it was. I drove around the block
for about 2 or 3 minutes until I started seeing
smoke coming from under the hood again.
Could the problem be that it needs power
steering fluid? What’s causing the smoke to
occur under the hood? I’m not sure what
power steering fluid I need for the car, all it
says in the manual is “GM hydraulic power
steering fluid”, doesn’t say a specific name or
brand.

I agree with the leak and it's so bad that it's getting on something hot and smoking, so get it fixed before you set the whole thing on fire.
