Try going to Auto Zone to get a free reading of the check engine light code, this will give you an idea of where to start troubleshooting.

I have the same issue with my 2005 Highlander. I took my SUV to two Toyota dealerships and Pep Boys. All results came back that my Caliber Converter needs to be replaced. The part comes from Toyota and costs approx. $750 plus labor.
