Ask to see the title of the vehicle. It will be stamped "encumbrance satisfied" and have a signature and the date the lien was released. Another thing, you can't always rely on DMV records for this. In NJ, for example, when a vehicle is paid off the owner is supposed to take the title to their local DMV office and have them remove the lien information from DMV records. Since I refuse to do that because I don't think that's my responsibility my 08 Grand Marquis will still show a lien on the vehicle even though I paid it off years ago. But I have the title to prove no lien is on the vehicle! Hope that helps! Jim
