Fuel tank

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
When I try to pump gas into my 2008 Jeep Compass the pump keeps shutting
off as though the tank is full, but it's not full. I've gone to different gas stations,
but still have the same problem. The inlet seems to be a bit loose for some
reason, or at least it has a lot of play where I insert the pump nozzle into the
tank. What's wrong?

If it has always been like that, you might just have to pump gasoline more slowly. I noticed that the pumps are pumping faster so getting gas doesn't take as long, but some cars can't fill that fast.
Also, check the evap system. The air in the tank has to go somewhere when you fill up or it burps backup the fill pipe and shuts off the pump.
I completely agree with "Hornet". The air escaping from the tank create " back pressure" in the pump nozzle and shutting off the pump ( most common in smaller vehicles)
I have a jeep compass and could not fill the tank fast at all after going to a lot of repair shop found out how to fix it the tank has a shut off valve in the tank and it was closed so the tank could not breath took the gas cap off the tank removed the line from the filter in the back of the car going to the tank and blow it out with an air hose problem solved it reset the valve so the tank can breath
