Why are some Camry V6 LE made in Japan and others with same drivetrain made in Japan?

Asked by Kevie1970 Sep 23, 2008 at 10:34 AM about the 2008 Toyota Camry LE V6

Question type: General

I was at a Toyota dealer the other day and noticed that two Camrys with the exact same drivetrain were made in different countries. It is easy to tell because it says so right on the window sticker. The only difference in the exterior is that the Japan made Toyotas have "pop out" squares on the bumpers for jacking points (I assume). What really intrigues me is that the dealer salesmen did not have a ready explanation for this. I figured that maybe it is due to inadequate manufacturing capacity in the US. Any other information regarding this subject would be welcome. Thanks.

Dang that is a good question... I don't know the answer off my head, I'll do a little digging, hopefully someone will beat me with the explanation.

Looking around I've found that in 06 they sold 2.5 million units here in the US and that their North American manufacturing limit is ~2.2 million... I couldn't find sale figures for more recently or exact manufacturing numbers but I'm guessing they are having to import due to demand exceeded the manufacturing process, since they potentially can do so... On a side note Toyota's site claims they manufacturer only ~1.3 million here in North America compaired to the 2.2 I'd found on another site?

I have a 2004 Camry that was made in Japan and can tell you one difference is the outside sideview mirrors. The whole assembly got wiped out so ordered a replacement and found that the ones made in Japan have a different hook-up to the defroster than the American made one. I ordered the Japan made one from Auto-zone and when the mechanic went to install it found that they had actually given me the American made one and so I have no defroster on that mirror. Always check as there are some differences.
