my fj cruiser is not 4 x 4 and i wanted to know good it is if i where to take it on dirt trails and how far can i take it and what gear is recommended?

Low, 1 or 2 on an automatic depending on conditions. You shouldn't be taking trails in road gears regardless of if you have a 4x4 or a 4x2. As for handling it, try to keep to dry even trails and watch for and avoid hazards that look like you could lose traction or unbalance yourself from your drive wheels.
