Car goes from C to H ?

Asked by Gabrielle Feb 24, 2017 at 09:44 PM about the 2008 Mercury Milan V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This is an issue I've been having periodically. If I'm stuck
in traffic for a certain period of time my car will start to go
from the needle being between C and H then make its
way up to H ! Now my mechanic stated he noticed the
cap on the antifreeze reservoir wasn't tightening
thoroughly. It appeared that the fluid I had there drained
out completely when it overheated and I'm
Wondering if the cap is the reason possibly as to why.

I would fix the cap issue but you are probably due for a cooling system service. Hoses, radiator flush, thermostat etc. Also make sure the cooling fans are turning on.

I would look for other reasons than that cap. Like are the fans turning on, on the radiator? Without the fans working the engine would heat up.

Now that its been overheated, check for head gasket leaks, Compression test, Exhaust in cooling system, White smoke from tail pipe, Water in oil.
