Does the AWD MKX really get lower gas mileage than FWD when AWD not activated?

all awd or 4wd vehicles get less mpg than 2wd vehices. you have more gear boxes and thus loss of efficiency through the powertrain. My awd MKX gets 17.4 in the city and 22 on the highway. The only thing I have done so far to increase fuel economy is put a K&N air filter in. I plan on getting an SCT tuner for it ($400) and that will increase the economy by another 2 mpg.
