Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had an emission test done on my 2009 Toyota Corolla S and it failed.  The code that
failed was P0037.  They told me they don't know anything and to go to a mechanic.  I
looked it up (my engine light was on, as well) and it came up O2 sensor.  I spoke with
Toyota to get some info and they wanted me to bring it in and charge me an arm and a
leg. They did say that it is usually only one that goes bad at a time.  I'm trying to figure
out how you test for that.  Should I just go to auto zone and see if they can help?  I am
replacing it myself.  Also, inquiring on price..they range from $40-160.. I was hoping if I
only need one not to spend more than $60-80 I want quality but I don't want the most
expensive, especially if I do not really need to spend that amount.

Jim is spot-on. You can trust his advice. The guys at Auto-Zone will scan it and some of them know what they are doing, others not so much. Just remember (some of them) are trying to sell you something whether you need it or not. MOST are honest, but electronic parts can not be returned, even if never installed. And the dealer you hit the proverbial nail on the head.... and Auto-Zone guys will not test the sensor, only tell you what they read on OBDII scanner. yes, each 02 sensor can be tested, but some of them are heated electrically and often the problem is not the sensor it's self, but rather the wiring to it. In the next window is a link that explains how to test an 02 senso
