I have a 2008 Avalanche and had the same thing happen as well. Oil pressure gauge would initially read a normal level then suddenly drop. After checking the oil level I took it straight to the shop. Luckily it ended up just being a bad oil pressure sensor in my truck. If the problem wasn't caused by a bad sensor I'd assume the oil pump went bad.

Had this happen to mine at 190k miles, when pressure would drop below 25 psi on gauge you will start to hear a lifter tick when cold, once it got to temp it would keep pressure over 25 psi. Long story short it turned out to be the O-Ring on the oil pump pickup tube. Once fixed, pressure never drops below 40 psi.
