i am wondering in 1968 how many rs ss coupe models were made.  i have happend to obtain one and know it is very rare but was wondering. it has the tuck away headlight and a 350 emblem on the front fenders.  standard black interior.

Hello, There were 40,977 RS's and 30,695 SS's produced in 1968. Of course, many fewer than this survive today. Congratulations on your new car! Best of luck! CarGrrl

I also looked on a number of sites to try and find out specifically now many rs ss models were made but apparently it is so rare that most Camaro sites don't list it as a trim. I did find one site that said "It is impossible to determine how many "base" models were produced because certain options were combined with others (for example, you could combine the Rally Sport option with the Super Sport, Z/28, and Custom Interior options), and there is no breakdown of production numbers when options were combined."

i also happend to come across a 1968 camaro rs ss with the 350 badges and also a rally sport badge behind the front tire but it has a white nose strip, white leather seats, and a white rag top. also has auto windows, locks and driver seat. but the number of sites that i looked on the common number i found was about 600 to 700 rs ss's were made back in 1968 but like the one guy said most of those cars did not survive to this day so that number could be drasticly less. could possible be under 100 or above 100 so definatly restore that thing tobe fully original and man you got one heck of a car for car shows man

hello I just recently found this site I have purchased a 68 rs/ss camero ( 396 banners on fender) minus the motor and tranny but the guy I bought it from has a 396 with munchie tranny so looks like headed in a double bonus round here The body and chasy is in mint shape no rust, all origional no body work other than it being primed and ready to paint hopefully I will remember my way back to this site but look forward to learning more about this find thanks James Richie bluediamondshires@yahoo.com ps no I am not looking at selling at this point and time in case you are wondering

How can you tell your car is an rs/ss model. I have a 1968 in pieces, it has hidden headlight, a clock inside the tac. A 4 gauge package built into the front floor console, not original engine, I was told when I purchased it in 1970 it had a 396 but was removed due to the gas crises. but is there a number somewhere on the car that can verify the factory package(rs,ss, engine). The 13 digit vin number on the driver side windshield states its a 1968, 8 cyl, 2 dr coupe the 49,863 car built that year built in Norwood. but that is as much as I can verify. THANKS FOR ANY INFORMATION YOU CAN PROVIDE.

I have a 1968 RSSS camaro that is fully loaded and is a Big Block factory car with factory air,12 bolt,multi leaf rear,Hounds Tooth interior,Rare SS steering wheel,Black tail light section,power steering,Vacume RS,Butter nut Yellow,Black vinyl top,floor console. The Black RSSS stays black in the tail light section, but other colors from the factory always have Black Tail lights section to separate small blocks from the Big Blocks, and when you saw one in public you knew it was a Big Block from the Black Rear tail light section. This 1968 is probably the rarest RSSS in America and makes me very happy owning for last 27 years. Hope this helps with your discovery look for the Black in the back is your first clue being a factory Big Block if it wasn't painted to make it appear as one. That factory steering wheel in my car was one of 169 made and was special order from the factory. Great Find :)

Also Astro Ventilation,SS hood with hood ornaments and small block SS is flat ornament and the Big Block hood ornament has concaved holes in the hood ornament. I know this seems strange to have different Hood Ornaments but the small block SS has a Flat ornament and the Big Block SS ornament was totally different with four sunk holes and not flat is another way to distinguish differences. I knew someday my rare camaro would finally be worth the storage space under Air at my home and the third owner. The first owner was a female who bought the car in 1968 owning it for ten years. Then a male school English teacher owned it second for ten years. I found this RSSS in the driveway of the second mans who was in his sixties about ready to retire and sold me the car for $3000.00 to buy a brand new Ford Taurus is why he sold it to me. Second person make probably regrets the sale to me but I had the Cash and have owned it ever since. Ask me questions if I can help as we are almost blood related do to the rarest find imaginable. I believe my rare RSSS could fetch $150k if I sold it ?

Just wanted to add, it was WAY easier to make a Camaro RS an SS/RS (clone) because of the headlite doors, and signal light valances. Only SS cars had F70 - 14 tire size. So check the sticker inside the glove box. If your RS has that tire size, it is likely an SS/RS. Z28 had E70 x15", and base Camaro's and RS's had 7.35" wide x 14".

Hi. I am the 2nd owner of a 68 RS/SS. It has 32,000 original miles and it is the 47 car off the line. Vin # 00047. I have owned this classic since 1980. It has a 327 and 13 to 1 compression. Restored the vehicle with my brothers who all own there own classic camaro. Everything is brand new and vehicle has been appraised for $70,000. Everything is original down to the Hideaway headlights. If you want to be on the right page search for Chevy assembly books they tell you everything and give all the options available.

That’s the truth no 327 in SS car. There we no actual count kept or vin markings that meant RS/SS in 68 the only true way to know for sure pretty much is to know the exact history of a car like I do. Many people try to fix up these cars and claim they are real and so many people make the mistake of putting a 327 in it then making these claims it’s very funny but also very shitty deal cause a lot of people buy these cars and they look correct except the engine and mostt who don’t know assume they came with 327 but they didn’t. Everyone who answered pretty much had slot of the correct info though. Hood, 14” wheels, reverse lights below bumper, headlights, 350 or 396 only. So basically all or most of the RS show with all the SS go. My 68 RS/SS is matching numbers 350-4 speed Muncie,12 bolt, console gauges, vinyl top, super rare 5 leaf springs in rear. I’m the 3rd owner car has 110k miles I have owned it from about 70k. Congrats on your 68 any first gen camaro is a blessing though bottom line!

In November of 1978 9 days after I turn 16 I bought my first car it was a 1968 Camaro Super Sport with the Rally Sport package The Hideaway headlights the deluxe interior The Tick toc Tac and gauges down in the console it was originally 350 small block car but the man I bought it from had kept that motor and put in a 327 I still have the car today it's been upgraded with a 383 stroker motor engine and love it.when the paint man disassembled the body he noticed that the numbers from the trunk all the way up front matched and said my stripes included front nose stripe and along bottom of doors and across the rear panel of taillights. All SS Camaros made before January had the straight louvered panels in hood any after January had the square ones. In my years of understanding the base model had a flat hood , the RS had the flat hood with a deluxe package hide a way lights , door trim , molded door panels , AC was still an option . Small block 327, or 6cyl .The SS was the 350 that was released in 67 the 67 gas cap announced that from the rear of car SS 350 , the brake lines, the leaf springs. The 12 bolt rear end When i got my car , and still today i still have Manual brakes .there were more options that could be ordered like disc breaks big blocks , it was all in the price that was to be payed . I would loved to afford one of each , the bench seat , the back fold down seat option .the Camaro is one to be enjoyed. And by the way i was working at a Drive in restaurant at a $1.25 an hour at age 14 , at age 16 i gave the man $1500. Plus tax and never regretted it.

I think I have a very rare camero it's a 68 inline 6 1 barrel carb. It has drum breaks all 4 tires. It has a power gluide transmission with shifter on column. It is red interior and exterior no spoiler and no stripes! I was told it was the base or floor model Chevy used and then people could add things to it! It it's also a complete original all numbers match!!!

My 68 RS SS 396 350hp 4 speed deluxe interior deluxe SS steering wheel same owner 47 years frame off just as it came from the factory with nos parts. I image this is a one of one car being stripe delete.

Have a specific question. Does anyone know out of the 10,772 SS 396 Camaro’s built in 1968 where convertible’s to Coupe‘s I just Acquired a 1968 SS 396 four-speed convertible original paint original interior car in Le Mans blue . Have window sticker and order form from the dealership in 1968

There were 235147 68 Camaro's build with 20440 convertibles so that makes about 9% were convertibles. There was 30695 of them SS so that would make roughly 2750 convertibles and how many were 396 4 speed a very rare car. What a find they are only original once!
