BMW 335i trunk problem

Asked by GuruSNZ4D Jun 03, 2019 at 08:20 PM about the 2008 BMW 3 Series 335i Convertible RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

MY 2008 BMW 335I (E93) Trunk lid latches
but will not pulldown and lock automatically.
The dash displays a trunk open warning, and
the hardtop cannot be lowered. The keyfob
and pushbutton under dash and key opens
the trunk.
I have checked fuses and the trunk the locks
do not appear to have individual protected
circuits. I suspect that the latch
microswitches are faulty and are not sending
a signal to the pulldown motors.
Any help in troubleshooting this problem
would be greatly appreciated

My 2013 e93 has recently started experiencing the same problem, on an intermittent basis. The BMW dealership was not able to replicate the problem and a diagnostic scan did not reveal any issues. They reinitialized trunk latch operation, but the problem has returned. The dealership has suggested replacement of the latch mechanism, but the OEM price for the part alone (without labour) is close to CAD$1,000. Will likely bite the bullet and have the latch replaced, as it would suck to be caught out with the top down.
