Car wont take gears or accerlate

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car has had shifting issues in the fall of 2023. The code that I got at
Autozone was "P0717" and said to replace the Transmission Speed Sensor. I
replaced but sensors and the problem got "minimized" but not fully resolved.
Last week my car would have huge issues shifting from the second to the third
gear. I thought maybe the replacement part is not sitting right or also went
faulty. I changed them again. The morning commute was "okay". However,
when I drove home the car at higher speeds on the expressway wouldnt shift
at all anymore, I had to stop at the shoulder and I barely made it home. The car
wouldnt shift AT ALL when stopping or standing still at a red light or stop sign.
I had to shut off the car and restart almost every block to get the car to move.
Everytime I would stand still the RPM would go up but the speedometer
wouldnt move an inch. I noticed today that when I move the stick from P to R
to N and D that I can notice how the transmission engages but that
engagement stops within 20-30 seconds. I can let the car in Drive and release
the break but the car wont move at all.

The weirdest thing is, that ever since it got SUPER BAD, the check engine light
wont turn on.

In addition, for some weird reason this car wont turn on when I have driven it
for at least 30min straight and leave it off for more than 5min. For example, if I
come back from work and take a 10min break at home and then want to go to
the gym, the car would not turn on. (battery is brand new, no alternator codes).
I would need to wait another 30min in order for it turn on and most often also
press the speed pedal get it to turn on. I dont know if this has anything to do
with the shifting too...

Did you use actual Toyota replacement parts? Sounds like the transmission is on its way out, however you may also have other issues, like wiring, engine management or main computer problems. I recommend you find a good independent shop in your area and have them take a look at it.

Hey! No, I bought aftermarket parts. I also refilled the transmission fluid with half a quart of "Castrol Transmax Import Multi-vehicle". Is it possible that there is too much fluid now?

Ok, but how would the fluid get dirty if I have never touched it before? I read that they normally do not recommend to change the transmission fluid and that it should last a "lifetime". On the other side, people mentioned that low transmission fluid is the most common cause for shifting issues.

You go old school as far as transmission servicing goes, that means you need to service it every 30000 miles. I don’t care what the manual says. Other techs will confirm this. I never let my transmission service go over that mileage. But things happen internally as they do eventually wear out.

I second the ATF replace at 30k-50k miles (50k if you go with super high- quality ATF and you monitor it often ). ATF is NOT a never replace item. I would get a shop that you trust to do diagnosis or do it yourself if you’re capable.
