seems fairly straightforward, this isn't one of these 'transducer resolver' type packed with electronics...simply tape the new end onto the old beginning with some duct tape and pull it thru. screw onto the back of the speedo, and down into the transmisson--done~
I used to leave the outer sheath in place and just replace the center part. Disconnect the cable at the back of the speedometer, pull the broken cable out and replace the core. The cables usually broke at the speedometer end.

iys probably not een the cable. twhere it goes to the tranny (mines manual) theres a twist in plug/cap lookin thing. twist it (after bending the stop tab back) and pull it out. there should be a little gear with teeth. they are probably ground down. mine were.
