There was a 454 big block V8 produced in 72. It had 365 horsepower.
The 1972 Chevelle SS had a top engine rated at 270 net hp (201 kW) So, no, the LS6 was in 1970 with 450 hp.
The 1972 SS Chevelle 454 had 450 horsepower
1970 was the only year the LS6 454/450 HP was offered as a production car there was also a LS5 455/360 HP version Gross 1971 had 1 454 version, the LS5 rated 365 HP Gross 1972 again had the same basic LS5 engine but now rated SAE, 270 HP

it was rated at 450 hp but its actually more like 500hp at the wheels
There were 14 built but none 'officially' sold to the public
I have a correct date coded 1972 LS6 454 so you can not tell me they did not make one.
By the way that correct date coded 1972 LS6 454 with a crr prefix is for sale. Complete engine standard bore 4 bolt main with correct rectangular port 72 casting heads. 716 341 2037
cowmann66 has posted incorrect info. The only Chevelles built with RPO (Regular Production Option) LS6 were in 1970. CRR engine code is from 1970 NOT 1972. The 454 Chevelles built in '72 were the 270 net hp RPO LS5, engine codes CPA,CPD,CRW or CRX. I own a '71 LS5 bought brand new by my brother (pictured below) engine code CPD and although the owners manual shows 365 hp and optional 425 hp, no '71 425hp Chevelles were built. GM only built 188 LS6 Corvettes in '71. http://www.chevellestuff.net/1971/engine_id_codes.htm
