Question type: Car Customization

I want to put a bigger motor in my 84 monte carlo ss, what
motors would drop right in with no major mods? And what would
be the best manual trans to go with it?

keep it all stock or available option for that year Chevrolet! I saw Monte Carlos with small block V8's like 327, 350, & 400's but the rare cool one's had a big block 396" yo a 427" V8..hint, hint a crate 454 would be nice who'd know. I love that year ??? Montes with the little slit tail lights. JIMZ

JIMZ No big block options for the Monte of that body style. 305 was the largest displacement option and came in the ss. I'm sure a BB would fit but it would be alot of work mostly due to the weight (suspension upgrades to retain handling).

Since your an '84 and not '85 (with the EFI on the v-6's or the electric carb on the v-8's) the swap should be easy. If you have the 305 I would stick with a small block chevy but of a larger displacement as your stock components will bult up untill you choose to upgrade (exhaust, throttle linkages, etc) I would figure out your budget for the build and start looking for a sbc crate engine to meet your budget and power requirements. JEGS, Summit, GMPerformance, etc. Lots out there up to 425 hp, race crate engines have more power but sacrifice street manners. Or stuff in a BB, doable but lots of work and the weight would need suspension mods. Or LS swap, lots of parts out there now and decent power from a lighter motor? Up to you and your budget. The T-56 six speed would be my tranny choice.
