09 Chevy Malibu gas tank

My 2009 Chevy Malibu  gas gauge says it's empty
and my low fuel light is on but when I go to fill up it
will only take 3 gallons andshut off and spits gas
back when I try to put more, I forced one more
gallon pulling the gas nozzle out a little. When I
turn my car it reads less than half a tank! Help
what is going on??
