What would make a 2009 chevy impala run hot?

It happened on a morning where it was 9 degrees outside. The defroster never blew out hot air, it was all cold and once the car started moving the temp hand went past the halfway mark. Looked under the hood and their was still antifreeze in the reservoir. And the system was flushed a few weeks prior.

Check the actual level in the radiator. The coolant system can only draw fluid from the reservoir if it was full or close to full in the first place. It sounds like the engine is low.
^^^ what he said. Sometimes air can get trapped in the cooling system and prevent it from working properly. If that's not it, you may need to replace the thermostat, or you might have a clog somewhere in the system. Next time it warms up, turn on the heater and touch the heater hoses and radiator hoses to see which of them are hot.
Check the anti freeze and make sure the reservoir is not frozen. If it is frozen or sluggy, have the water drained and replace it with new antifreeze/water combination that will take you to -20 or -30 below.
